Discussions on the formation of edema and the reaction to palpation are numerous (Depression that does not rise immediately after pressing indicates Qi edema, whereas one that rises immediately indicates Water edema; Zhang Jingyue proposed the opposite view). Since Qi and Water share the same origin, there is no need to strictly distinguish them (When Qi stagnates, Water also stagnates; when Qi moves, Water also moves). By examining the floating and sinking qualities of the six pulse positions to assess both exterior and interior conditions, the transmission of the Wupi Yin (Five-Peel Decoction) was taught with great earnestness (originating from Hua Yuanhua's *Zhongzangjing*). The Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) and Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) possess lofty efficacy rooted in fundamental principles, while Fuzi Tang (here referring to Mahuang Fuzi Gancao Tang, Ephedra, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction) and Magan Tang (Mahuang Gancao Tang, Ephedra and Licorice Decoction) demonstrate courageous supremacy. For skin swelling, treatment should alternatively address the nine types of Qi disorders; the Fuling Daoshui Tang (Poria Water-Draining Decoction) is known through hearsay (Various schools highly praise its subtlety, though I have heard much of it without having tested it personally).
Headache is detailed in the *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage). Taiyang headache occurs at the back of the head, Yangming headache at the forehead, and Shaoyang headache at the sides. For other types of headache, Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) added with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Yuzhu (Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome) can be used for comprehensive treatment. This formula predominantly uses Wind-dispelling herbs because only such herbs can reach the vertex of the head. If the headache is caused by Blood deficiency and unresponsive to other medicines, Danggui Buxue Tang (Danggui Tonifies the Blood Decoction) with one liang of Lurong (Deer Antler) should be suitable. For kidney-deficiency headache, Zuogui Yin (Left Restoring Infusion) added with Roushouyu (Cistanche Stem), three to four qian, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome), two qian, and Xixin (Asarum Root), one qian five fen, serves as the primary treatment. Only "Zhen Toutong" (True Headache), characterized by severe pain throughout the brain and cold limbs extending to the joints, is considered incurable. Luo Longji used Sanwuqi San (Three-Five Seven Powder) to rescue patients; this formula consists of Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root Prepared), three liang, Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit), five liang, and Ganshanyao (Dioscorea Opposita Rhizome Dried), seven liang, ground into powder, taken three qian after meals with ginger and jujube decoction. Alternatively, large doses of Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) may be used to suppress the rebellious Qi of the Jueyin channel, since the Jueyin meridian converges at the vertex; however, how many out of ten cases can this save?
(The meaning of the classics) The *Pingren Qixiang Lun* (Treatise on the Pulse Manifestations of Healthy People) states: "If the Cun Kou pulse feels short upon palpation, it indicates eye pain." The *Zhezhi Jiao Lun* (Treatise on Profound Teachings) states: "When the Three Yang channels arrive exclusively, it means the Three Yang channels converge. Their convergence is like wind and rain; upward it manifests as diseases of the vertex, downward as leakage diseases." The *Jingmai Pian* (Chapter on Meridians) states: "The Bladder belongs to the Foot-Taiyang channel. When it undergoes pathological changes, it causes rushing sensations, headache with eyes feeling as if they are falling out, and the neck feeling as if being pulled." The *Maiyao Jingwei Lun* (Treatise on Essential Secrets of Pulse Diagnosis) states: "A pulse that comes rapidly and departs slowly, indicating excess above and deficiency below, constitutes Jue-di disease (rebellious disease of the vertex)." The *Feng Lun* (Treatise on Wind) states: "Wind Qi ascending along the Fengfu point results in Brain Wind." It further states: "Being struck by wind shortly after washing the hair results in First Wind." It also states: "Wind entering the system connected to the head results in Eye Wind and cold eyes." The *Qibing Lun* (Treatise on Rare Diseases) states: "There are people who suffer from headache that persists even after walking a few steps; this implies an internal invasion reaching the brain marrow. Since the brain is the master of the marrow, rebellious Qi in the brain causes headache, and the teeth also hurt. This disease is named Jueni (Rebellious Counterflow)." The *Juebing Lun* (Treatise on Jue Diseases) states: "In True Headache, the pain is extremely severe, affecting the entire brain, with cold limbs extending to the joints; it is incurable."
