To treat retained placenta with abdominal distension and urgency, this medicine causes it to decompose and pass; if delayed, rescue is impossible.
*Huai Niu Xi* (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), *Chuan Xiong* (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), *Pu Huang* (Pollen Typhae, lightly stir-fried) (each 2 liang), *Dan Pi* (Cortex Moutan) (1 liang 5 qian), *Gui Xin* (Cortex Cinnamomi) (4 qian).
All are ground into powder. Take 5 qian each time, decocted in water and taken orally.
There are four methods for postpartum care: First, leaning posture. After delivery, the woman should close her eyes and sit for a while, supported by bedding on the bed; in summer, use a stool for support. If she cannot maintain the position herself, have an experienced older woman support her; do not lie down suddenly. Frequently push the hand from the heart region down to below the umbilicus to facilitate the downward flow of lochia. It is advisable to burn lacquerware and charcoal soaked in vinegar in the room to prevent blood syncope. If fainting or coma occurs, these two methods should be used even more diligently. Second, dietary selection. For postpartum women, white rice porridge is suitable initially. After several days, consume a small amount of shredded hairtail fish, well-washed and eaten blandly. After half a month, eggs can be consumed, but they must be cracked and boiled to nourish the stomach. After one full month, small amounts of mutton and pig trotters may be added. Although wine promotes blood circulation, its nature is fierce, so it should not be consumed in excess. Following these guidelines ensures no illness during childbirth and improved health postpartum. Third, avoiding wind, nurturing the spirit, and speaking sparingly. New mothers must avoid wind and cold, refrain from combing hair, washing the face, and especially washing feet, lest wind and dampness invade and cause disease. They should not sleep alone to avoid fright; fright scatters the spirit and qi, leading to various complications. At the moment of birth, there is no need to ask whether the baby is male or female, as speech may leak qi, and emotions like love or hate may disturb qi. Generally, excessive talking should be avoided, as it may weaken middle qi and cause disease. Be cautious and vigilant. Fourth, medication. Immediately after delivery, ancient formulas recommend drinking a small amount of hot urine from a healthy boy. Since this is difficult to obtain quickly, and cold urine may induce vomiting, taking *Shenghua Tang* (Decoction for Generating Blood) is also excellent. However, postpartum women often suffer from palpitations and spontaneous sweating. Therefore, I formulated *Gui Jiang Yin* (Decoction of Angelica and Ginger) for them, which proves very appropriate. With proper modifications, it can save critical postpartum conditions. Medication for postpartum women should not involve cool/cold agents lightly, nor should it be excessively pungent and hot. Postpartum qi and blood are deficient; using cool/cold agents may cause cold in the zang organs. Conversely, *Gui Zhi* (Ramulus Cinnamomi), *Fu Zi* (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), and *Gan Jiang* (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum) are pungent and hot; if the zang-fu organs are not cold, how could they tolerate such potency? Peaceful regulation is the correct approach. If there are symptoms of extreme cold or heat, flexible treatment is required; one must not be rigid or dogmatic.
