Medical texts originated from Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo, while prescriptions were transmitted by Lu Yi (Bian Que) and Qin Yueren (Bian Que). Since the Han and Tang dynasties, many secret formulas have remained undisclosed; since the Song and Yuan dynasties, written works have mostly served as remedies for deficiencies. Without careful investigation into their origins and developments, treating diseases may cause them to worsen; only through extensive learning and deep research can classic medical texts be preserved and not lost. Such as my elder relative, Lord Shuanghu, who was commended for filial piety by the court, with records of his mediocre conduct and major acts of charity that are widely praised. Only the two volumes of "Yixue Zhigui" (Guide to Medical Knowledge) had not yet been printed. I requested a copy to read, and suddenly understood that medicines are compounded according to Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi (Sovereign, Minister, Assistant, Courier) principles, and syndromes are detailedly distinguished by Biao-Li (Exterior-Interior) and Yin-Yang. It judiciously combines ancient and modern methods, with excellent techniques and benevolent intentions, truly being a merit contributor to the *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot). My ancestors also gained fame in the Imperial Medical Bureau, but I regret there is no successor. When Lord Shuanghu moved from Youcheng to Xinghua, living next to my ancestral home, our families had deep ties spanning three generations, allowing me to be influenced by his scholarship and familiarize myself with his life. Whenever I recall his profound attainments and innate intelligence: medical skills arise from filial piety, supplementing new books on elderly care; Dao (Way) is realized from the heart, how diligent he was in his studies. He vigorously supported the poor, often forgetting his own emptiness; when facing difficult syndromes, after regulation, spring-like recovery would appear. Unexpectedly, in the Gengxu year, during a plague, because he treated patients without regard for his own safety, he exhausted himself and contracted a severe epidemic. Ge Hong fell ill and could not rise, yet still pitied the poor; (What Lord said while bedridden were all clinical observations and past good deeds.) Wen Weng dined and drank as usual, yet knew his death day early; (Thirty days before his deathbed change, he knew his lifespan was short.) A volume of medical texts is merely called a posthumous legacy; exploring for a lifetime, he finally wrote an immortal work. Alas! If Zhao Meng goes, who will do good? If Cang Gong dies, who will save lives? His handwritten notes remain, his mental source can be connected. What brings joy is that the heir to the family profession shows promise, and Yi Huan is forever praised as a worthy successor; it further confirms that teaching filial piety through books provides Confucians with another record of serving parents.
In the latter half of August, the first year of Xianfeng, your humble nephew Yao Wu Kuan bows and records respectfully.
