Ezu (Morning Sickness) refers to symptoms of vomiting and nausea, dizziness, aversion to food, or selective eating.
[Suwen] The Yellow Emperor asked: How can one know that a pregnant woman is about to give birth? Qibo replied: The body may have pathological symptoms, but the pulse shows no signs of pathogenic factors. (From "Fuzhong Lun")
[Dazhuling] If a pregnant woman has weak constitution, she will develop Ezu disease. The presentation includes normal facial color, smooth and harmonious pulse, feeling of heaviness in limbs, dizziness and vertigo, selective eating, aversion to the smell of food, craving for salty and sour tastes. In severe cases, there may be alternating chills and fever, mental restlessness, vomiting of phlegm and water, mental confusion with inability to bear it. Chao Yuanfang called this Ezu, noting only differences in severity.
[Zhang Zhongjing] When a woman presents with a peaceful pulse, but the Yin pulse (radial artery at the cun position, typically reflecting kidney essence/fetal status) is small and weak, and she experiences thirst and inability to eat without chills or fever, it is named pregnancy. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is the primary treatment. According to standard practice, these symptoms should appear around the sixtieth day. If mismanaged by other treatments, the condition might be delayed by a month. If vomiting and diarrhea are added, one should "Jue" (stop/abandon) the treatment and wait for self-recovery.
The term "Jue Zhi" means to stop medical interventions and allow the body to recover naturally. I once treated one or two women with Ezu who worsened with continued treatment. Reflecting on Zhang Zhongjing's principle of "Jue," I stopped medication, and they recovered naturally after over a month. Truly, the words of the sages are great!
[Zhu Danxi] Ezu should be treated from the perspective of Phlegm, mostly using Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction).
[Luo Tianyi] Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) treats pregnancy Ezu, vomiting, mental restlessness, dizziness, aversion to food smells, craving for sour/salty tastes, preference for lying down, joint pain, emaciation with phlegm, and unstable pregnancy.

Grind the three ingredients into powder, bind with fresh ginger juice to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills with warm water, three times daily. (Qianjin Fang argues against Banxia due to its potential to disturb the fetus, asking if Zhang Zhongjing was unaware. However, I have used Banxia frequently for pregnancy Ezu without disturbing the fetus. As the Classics state: "If there is a cause/pathology, there is no harm.")

A woman pregnant for three months vomited phlegm/water and food. Symptoms occurred daily during Yin-Mao hours (3-7 AM). She felt qi rushing up from the lower abdomen, followed by chest fullness and vomiting. Her face was red, slightly agitated, dizzy, unable to get out of bed, with limb pain and slight thirst. This was Liver Fire carrying Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) fire upward. Severity fluctuated daily. Pulse was harmonious but Right Cun was surging. Two months of various medicines failed. I treated her (note: text says "nan bing" male illness, likely a textual error or specific context, translating literally as treating a male illness case or typo for 'this illness') and accidentally used Chenxiang (Aquilariae Resina) ground in water to dissolve Baolong Wan (Dragon-Holding Pill). After one dose, chest widened and qi stopped rushing; after 2-3 doses, vomiting stopped, dizziness reduced, appetite returned, and she stabilized.
Another case: A woman surnamed Ying, pregnant seven months, had acid regurgitation and vomiting, obstructed pulse, epigastric fullness, qi attacking the back, pain in both elbows. She needed constant hot compresses/massage; vomiting provided slight relief. Pulse was surging.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, fried, 2 qian 5 fen), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, fried, 1 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Suosha (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) (each 5 fen), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, fried), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Fuling (Poria, 1 qian 5 fen), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 7 slices).
After two doses, acid regurgitation and vomiting stopped, epigastric fullness receded. Nighttime back/elbow pain persisted, managed with massage. Then given Baolong Wan dissolved in water, and the disease vanished.
[Zhu Danxi] A woman near thirty, pregnant two months, suffered vomiting and dizziness, feeling unbearable. She took Renshen, Baizhu, Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Fuling etc. for 5-7 days, feeling heavier. I palpated her pulse: both hands were wiry, left side more so and weak. I said: This is Ezu, provoked by anger. It was confirmed. With Liver Qi rebellious and carrying fetal qi, tonics like Renshen and Baizhu were inappropriate. I advised using Fuling Tang to deliver Yiqing Wan (Suppress Blue Pill, 24 pills) five times. After five doses, she felt slightly better. Pulse showed slight rapidness; she reported dry/bitter mouth and sour taste after eating congee. I reasoned residual stagnation in the diaphragm remained. I prescribed a decoction of Chuanxiong, Chenpi, Shanzhi, Fuling, Shengjiang to deliver Yiqing Wan (15 pills). After ten-plus doses, other symptoms resolved. She ate half her usual amount, felt sour taste after eating, and hunger when not eating. I judged Liver Heat was not fully cleared, so instructed her to take Yiqing Wan (20 pills) with plain water. She stabilized after twenty days. I palpated again: pulses were harmonious but Left hand was very weak, indicating the fetus would likely miscarry. Now that Liver Qi was balanced, Renshen and Baizhu could be used. I prescribed initial tonics to prevent deficiency after miscarriage. After one month, the fetus miscarried smoothly. Yiqing Wan consists solely of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) pills.
