[Yun] For women suffering from Shanghan (Cold Damage) or Fengzhong (Wind Strike), the treatment methods are no different from those for men, except in cases of Re Ru Xue Shi (Heat Entering the Blood Chamber) and Shanghan during pregnancy. One should use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish and stabilize the fetal blood, assisted by herbs that induce sweating or purge accumulation.
When a woman suffers from Shanghan or Fengzhong, presenting with spontaneous sweating, headache, stiffness of the neck and back, fever with aversion to cold, and a floating and moderate pulse, one must fear Heat Entering the Blood Chamber. Therefore, increase the dosage of Shaoyao (Peony Root) and use Guizhi Jia Shaoyao Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Added Peony).
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 1.5 liang) Chishao Yao (Red Peony Root, 3.5 liang) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 1.5 liang) Dazao (Jujube, 6 pieces)
Crush these ingredients finely. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in water.
When a woman suffers from Shanghan, with a floating and tight pulse, headache, body heat, aversion to cold without sweating, and after inducing sweating, if there is fear of Heat Entering the Blood Chamber, Mahuang Jia Shengdihuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction with Added Rehmannia) is appropriate.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 2.5 liang) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 1.5 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 0.5 liang) Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang) Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed, 25 pieces, skin and tips removed)
Crush these ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in water.
[From "Huofa"] When a woman suffers from Shanghan, and her menstrual period has just begun and then abruptly stopped, presenting with alternating chills and fever like malaria, delirious speech, and hallucinations of seeing ghosts, Ganjiang Chaihu Tang (Dried Ginger and Bupleurum Decoction) should be used.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 4 liang) Gualou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 1.5 liang) Muli (Ostreae Concha, 1 liang) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 1 liang)
Crush these ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in 1.5 sheng of water until reduced to 0.7 sheng, strain, and take warm. Initial administration may cause slight irritability; subsequent doses will induce sweating and cure the disease.
[Luo] Xiaochaihu Jia Dihuang Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction with Added Rehmannia) treats women and unmarried girls suffering from Shanghan with fever, where menstruation is either just starting or stopping. The patient is lucid during the day but experiences delirium at night, as if seeing ghosts. It also treats postpartum lochia that starts and suddenly stops, leading to a critical condition.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.25 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed in boiling water seven times) Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, 0.7 liang each)
Grind into coarse powder. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 2 Dazao (Jujubes), decoct together.
[Yun] When a woman suffers from Shanghan, with body heat, and a long and wiry pulse, it belongs to Yangming and Shaoyang channels. Symptoms include alternating chills and fever, restlessness at night and tranquility during the day, hallucinations resembling seeing ghosts, and menstruation that has just stopped; this indicates Heat Entering the Blood Chamber. If there is no fullness or hardness in the abdomen, Xiaochaihu Jia Mudanpi Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction with Added Moutan Bark) is the primary treatment. If there is severe fullness and hardness, Tao Ren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction to Order the Qi) is used.
Xiaochaihu Jia Mudanpi Tang
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.75 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 2 liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 0.6 liang) Dazao (Jujube, 3 pieces) Gancao (Licorice Root) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 0.75 liang each)

When a woman suffers from Shanghan, with headache and floating pulse, and the physician incorrectly uses purgation, pathogenic factors enter the interior due to deficiency. Menstruation ceases, epigastric region becomes knotted and hard, mouth is dry, tongue is parched, there are alternating chills and fever, delirious speech resembling seeing ghosts, and the pulse is deep and rapid. Purging is indicated; Xiaochaihu Jia Mangxiao Dahuang Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction with Added Natrii Sulfas and Rheum) is appropriate.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.75 liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed, 1.5 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 0.55 liang) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 0.7 liang each)

Crush these ingredients. Take 1 liang per dose, decoct with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Strain, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), boil again, and take warm. If the pulse is not deep and rapid, purging must not be used.
[From "Bencao"] In the Xinhai year, residing in Piling, Scholar Wang Zhongli's sister suffered from Shanghan, presenting with alternating chills and fever. At night, she appeared possessed by spirits. After six or seven days, she suddenly became comatose, with rattling phlegm sounds like sawing, locked jaw, eyes closed and unconscious. The condition was extremely critical, so I was summoned. I asked: "At the onset of the illness, did menstruation occur?" The family replied: "Menstruation had just started, but ceased when the illness began. For one or two days, there were alternating chills and fever; quiet during the day, but haunted at night. Since yesterday, excessive phlegm has developed, and she is unconscious." I said: "This is a case of Heat Entering the Blood Chamber. Zhang Zhongjing stated: When a woman suffers from Fengzhong (Wind Strike), with fever and aversion to cold, and menstruation happens to arrive, she is lucid during the day but delirious at night, as if seeing ghosts, with paroxysmal symptoms; this is named Heat Entering the Blood Chamber. Physicians who do not understand this administer harsh agents, leading to chest and diaphragm discomfort, upward surging of phlegm to the stomach, panting with high-pitched breathing, and coma. One must first resolve the phlegm, then eliminate the heat." I urgently administered Yicha San (One-Sip Powder). Within two hours, phlegm drained, she slept, and regained consciousness. Then, Xiaochaihu Jia Dihuang Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction with Added Rehmannia) was given. After three doses, the fever subsided, and she recovered spontaneously without sweating.
[Yun] When a woman suffers from superficial deficiency-type Shanghan, with spontaneous sweating, cool body, spastic limbs, and a deep and slow pulse, indicating Taiyang (Greater Yang) exterior syndrome and Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) root syndrome, with menstruation having just stopped, Guizhi Jia Fuhonghua Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Added Aconite and Safflower) is used.
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 2.5 liang) Shaoyao (Peony Root) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 1.5 liang each) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 1 liang) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, prepared) Honghua (Carthami Flos, 0.5 liang each)
Crush these ingredients finely. Take 1 liang per dose, decoct in 3 sheng of water.
When a woman suffers from Shanghan, Taiyang exterior syndrome, resolved by sweating, with pathogenic heat attacking internally and entering the Blood Chamber, accompanied by excessive menstruation but no fullness or hardness, Gancao Shaoyao Tang (Licorice and Peony Decoction) is used.
Gancao (Licorice Root) Shaoyao (Peony Root) Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 liang each)
Crush these ingredients. Take 1 liang per dose, decoct in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1.5 sheng. Strain, add 5 qian of Fa Hui (Ash of Hair), mix well, and take warm. If bleeding does not stop, needle Yinbai (SP-1).
