To treat "Mian Feng" (Continuous Convulsions) in newborn infants, characterized by daily convulsive twitching that persists continuously but is not extremely severe.
Prescription: Raw Melted Frankincense (Sanqian), Raw Melted Myrrh (Sanqian), Cinnabar (Yiqian), Whole Centipede (one large specimen), Whole Scorpion (Yiqian).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. During each breastfeeding session, place a small amount of the powder in the infant's mouth and wash it down with breast milk. Administer approximately five times a day.
This formula is generally effective for treating Mian Feng or Jing Feng (Infantile Convulsions) in children. However, if one can adapt to the specific syndrome and decoct a herbal soup to accompany the administration of this pill, the efficacy will be even greater.
Case 1: An infant developed Mian Feng several days after birth. The condition occurred several times a day and persisted for two months without cure. I prescribed this formula, and the infant recovered after taking it for a few days. The remaining medicine was subsequently used to cure three other infants.
Appendix:
My cousin Zhang XX frequently uses this pill to treat infantile Jing Feng. He often prepares a decoction tailored to the cold, heat, deficiency, or excess of the syndrome to administer alongside this pill. His decoction formulas are quite valuable. Therefore, I record two original case reports below.
(Original Case 1) Before the Duanwu Festival in the Jisi year, the six-month-old son of my friend Huang XX had unresolved fetal toxins on his head and body. His constitution was very weak. Suddenly, Liver Wind stirred internally, causing continuous convulsive twitching. The fontanelle was slightly bulging and soft to the touch, with a slight reddish hue. The fingerprint was purple and claw-shaped. The eyes were dim and spiritless, sometimes deviated. The pulse was floating, small, and rootless. This was due to the failure of Qi transformation to consolidate, leading to Liver Yang rushing upward to disturb the brain and nerves. Huang XX said, "Western medicine has declared this incurable; is there any hope?" I replied, "This condition is still treatable. Leave it to me, and I will strive to cure it completely." First, I administered San fen of Ding Feng Dan (Wind-Calming Pill) mixed with water. Subsequently, I used Raw Longgu (Dragon Bone), Raw Muli (Oyster Shell), and Raw Shijueming (Abalone Shell) to subdue Yang; Gouteng (Uncaria Hook), Boheye (Mint Leaf), and Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn, ground to fine powder, San fen) to extinguish wind; Sheng Jian Huangqi (Raw Arrow-Head Astragalus Root), Sheng Shanyao (Raw Chinese Yam), Shanzhurou (Cornus Fruit), and Xiyangshen (American Ginseng) to tonify deficiency; Qing Banxia (Clear Pinellia), Dannanxing (Arisaema with Bile), and Fungancao (Licorice Root) to resolve phlegm, direct rebellious Qi downward, and harmonize the middle jiao. These were decocted together to yield more than half a cup of liquid. San fen of Ding Feng Dan was mixed in, and administered frequently. After two doses, the Liver Wind ceased. The formula was adjusted, and after four additional doses, full recovery was achieved.
Commentary: Huangqi (Astragalus Root) is recorded in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* as treating various pediatric diseases. Its use here carries a slight risk of raising Yang. However, the *Shennong Bencao Jing* also states it treats major wind syndromes. Thus, it can be known that it extinguishes wind when used for Liver Wind stirred internally due to deficiency. Moreover, when combined with herbs that anchor and astringe the Liver, using only two or three qian poses no harm and offers benefits.
(Original Case 2) The seven-month-old son of Mr. Nie in Tianjin suddenly developed Liver Wind at night, exhibiting convulsions, panting, and inability to cry. It was mid-summer, with dry and hot weather. Observation of the Wind and Qi gates on the finger showed redness and a claw-shaped pattern. The pulse was rapid, and the body was hot, indicating internal stirring of Liver Wind. I urgently instructed the nursemaid to place the infant on the bed rather than holding him, to avoid the merging of maternal and infant heat. I also instructed opening windows to ventilate. First, Jiuhui Huisheng Dan (Emergency Life-Recovery Pill) was blown into the nose to calm and cool the cerebral system. Then, San fen of Ding Feng Dan was administered orally. Additionally, Boheye (Mint Leaf), Huangjuhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Gouteng (Uncaria Hook), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), and Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn) were used to disperse wind and clear heat; Raw Longgu (Dragon Bone), Raw Muli (Oyster Shell), and Raw Shijueming (Abalone Shell) to subdue Yang and suppress rebellion; Tiantuhuang (Bamboo Spathe) and Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit), and Chuanbeimu (Fritillaria Bulb) to benefit phlegm resolution and calm panting. After decocting the medicine, San fen of Ding Feng Dan was mixed in, and the patient was instructed to take it in divided doses without disturbing sleep. A subsequent letter reported that the wind ceased and the illness cured after just one dose.
Commentary: Although both cases involved convulsions due to internal stirring of Liver Wind, the etiologies differed significantly in terms of deficiency and excess. Zhang XX treated both with Ding Feng Dan, but the accompanying decoctions varied according to the specific syndrome. Such adept use of established formulas demonstrates skillful hands and a responsive mind.
Furthermore: An infant from the Liu family in Xianxian suffered from persistent Mian Feng. I was consulted at midnight. Knowing the condition was critical, I provided a small amount of Ding Feng Dan, which I had prepared based on formulas for pediatric wind syndromes. The convulsions stopped immediately upon administration and never recurred. Subsequent uses of this formula proved effective repeatedly.
[Attached Formula] Prevention of Infantile Umbilical Tetanus Powder from Bao Yunsao's *Yifang Xinbian*. The formula consists of Kufan (Burnt Alum) and Pengsha (Borax), each Erqianban; Zhusha (Cinnabar), Er fen; Bingpian (Borneol) and Shexiang (Musk), each Wuli. Grind all into a fine powder. Immediately after bathing a newborn, apply this powder to the umbilicus. Continue applying this powder every time the swaddling clothes are changed. Even after the umbilical cord falls off, continue application. Upon finishing one batch, Umbilical Tetanus will be permanently prevented.
Commentary: This formula is excellent. I have used it many times with success. It is truly a miraculous elixir for infant care.
