Indicated for conditions where excessive mental exertion damages the Shen (Spirit/Mind). Or, further due to excessive mental exertion, latent internal heat is generated, causing the blood of the Heart and Liver to be consumed increasingly day by day. This results in Heart Fire and Liver Qi rushing upward to the head, disturbing the nerves, causing the nerves to lose their normal control, leading to disordered perception, mistaking the right for wrong and the wrong for right, yet not reaching the severe stage of madness.

This is a formula that nourishes the Shen, tonifies Heart Blood, regulates Liver Qi, and clears deficient heat. Longan Aril is red in color and enters the Heart meridian, and contains abundant fluids; it is most effective in tonifying the blood aspect and also helps consolidate the dispersion of Heart Qi; therefore, it is used as the principal herb. Semen Platycladi contains much oil, thus it is good at nourishing the Liver and also has the ability to subdue the Liver. When used together with Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell, which are adept at restraining Liver Fire and Liver Qi, the Liver Fire and Liver Qi will naturally not carry Heart Fire upward to disturb the nerves. Raw Rehmanniae Radix is used for its ability to drain deficient heat from the Upper Jiao and to assist Longan Aril in generating blood. Asparagi Rhizome is used for its cool and moistening nature, which can clear the Heart and calm the Spirit, thereby opening dry phlegm. Radix Polygalae and Acorus Rhizome are used for their ability to open the orifices of the Heart, promote the discharge of phlegm, and facilitate the communication of the Shen. Cinnabar and iron rust water are used because both can stabilize the nerves and calm the Heart while soothing the Liver. Raw Malt is used precisely because the Liver is regarded as the General Officer, within which Ministerial Fire resides. If one only knows how to restrain and subdue it, it may provoke a reactive force; therefore, Raw Malt is added to follow its natural disposition. Generally, roasted malt aids digestion, while raw malt is excellent at soothing Liver Qi. As for Nardostachys Root, in Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to clear heat, resolve stasis, and dispel bi-syndrome; in Western medicine, it is highly regarded as an excellent drug for nourishing and calming the nerves, and also treats cholera with muscle spasms (convulsions). Since the nerves retain their normal function, muscle spasms will not occur, which sufficiently demonstrates the efficacy of nourishing and calming the nerves.
