Wu Gu (Sepiae Endoconcha, cuttlebone) is Hai Piao Xiao (Sepiae Endoconcha), and Lu Ru is Qian Cao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma). A detailed review of various Materia Medica texts indicates that the indicated uses for these two herbs are all stated to treat Beng Lou (metrorrhagia and metrostaxis) and Dai Xia (leukorrhea), which aligns with the meaning of using these two herbs in the *Nei Jing* (Classic of Internal Medicine). It is also stated that they can eliminate Zheng Jia (abdominal masses), which contradicts the meaning of using these two herbs in the *Nei Jing*. The properties of these two herbs recorded in the Materia Medica are so self-contradictory that later physicians doubt the prescriptions of the *Nei Jing* and dare not use them lightly, causing good prescriptions to be nearly buried. As for my view on these two herbs, their ability to treat Beng Lou indeed has solid empirical evidence, but whether they can eliminate Zheng Jia, I dare not make a hasty judgment.
The *Nei Jing* contains Si Wu Gu Yi Lu Ru Wan (Four Wu Gu One Lu Ru Pill), used to treat diseases damaging the Liver, manifesting as frequent bleeding from both anterior and posterior orifices. The prescription consists of four parts Wu Gu (Sepiae Endoconcha) and one part Lu Ru (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma) made into pills. Each pill is the size of a small bean; take five pills per dose, delivered with Abalone Soup.
Hai Piao Xiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) is the bone of the cuttlefish. This fish often ejects ink from its mouth, turning the water black; therefore, it can tonify the Kidney Meridian and assist its function of closure and storage. My friend Sun XX's wife had excessive and prolonged menstruation. Sun XX roasted Hai Piao Xiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) over low heat until it was half black and half yellow, then ground it into powder. It was taken with Lu Jiao Jiao (Cervi Cornus Colla, deer antler glue) dissolved in water, resulting in a cure after a single dose, demonstrating its astringent nature.
Qian Cao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma) is also known as Di Xue (Earth Blood) and can be used to dye crimson red. In the *Nei Jing*, it is called Ru Lu, which refers to the root of Ru Lu.
[Attached Case] Recalling when I was at home, I once treated a woman surnamed Dong from Cangzhou who suffered from severe Beng Lou (metrorrhagia). Her pulse was deficient and weak. Therefore, I heavily used Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), assisted by Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) and Mu Li (Concha Ostreae), and Yu Rou (Fructus Corni), other astringent substances. After taking the medicine, her condition improved slightly. Subsequently, I added Hai Piao Xiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) 4 qian and Qian Cao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma) 2 qian to the original prescription. After taking it, her illness was instantly cured, with not a drop of blood seen. From this, I deeply understood the hemostatic capability of these two herbs. Thus, I formulated An Chong Tang (Stabilize the Pulsation Decoction) and Gu Chong Tang (Consolidate the Pulsation Decoction), both of which utilize these two herbs.
A young woman in our county had been ill for many years, her body emaciated. She subsequently developed severe Dai Xia (leukorrhea). Multiple treatments were ineffective. Her pulse was slow, weak, and powerless, and she felt extreme cold in the lower jiao. Treatment employed Qing Dai Tang (Clear Leukorrhea Decoction), with Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 6 qian, Lu Jiao Jiao (Cervi Cornus Colla) 3 qian, and Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3 qian added. After ten doses, she was completely cured. Based on the above experiences, does the treatment of Dai Xia (leukorrhea) with Hai Piao Xiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) and Qian Cao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma) not have firm assurance? Regarding whether they can eliminate Zheng Jia (abdominal masses), since I have never used them singly in heavy doses, I actually lack this experience and dare not make a definitive conclusion.
