Pangolin Scales (Shan Jia): Taste is bland, nature is neutral. The odor is fishy and it possesses a penetrating quality; its penetrating nature is thorough and meticulous. Therefore, it can disseminate and unblock the Zang-Fu organs, penetrate the meridians, and reach the acupoints. It can resolve any pathology caused by blood stasis or blood accumulation. When used to treat Ding carbuncles (hard, deep-rooted sores) and Yong abscesses, one may use it boldly with immediate effects. It can also treat Jia-Ji masses (abdominal lumps), generalized numbness, obstruction of urination and defecation, and pain in the heart and abdomen. If one only knows its efficacy in treating sores and forgets its other virtues, that is a superficial understanding of Pangolin Scales.
For Ding carbuncles and Yong abscesses in the early stage before suppuration, I often use four qian of Pangolin Scales and Gleditsiae Spina (Zao Ci), six qian of Trichosanthis Radix (Hua Fen) and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu), three qian of Frankincense (Ru Xiang) and Myrrh (Mo Yao), and three whole Centipedes (Wu Gong). Administration leads to immediate resolution. It is also extremely effective for treating Heng-Xuan (such as buboes). For those already suppurating with redness and swelling, administration causes the redness and swelling to subside immediately, and pus drains easily. Regarding pathologies such as Jia-Ji masses, pain, numbness, and obstruction of urination and defecation where conventional treatments fail, Pangolin Scales can be added as a guiding herb. A friend, Mr. Huang, stated that for "Blood Arrow" syndrome (bleeding like an arrow) or continuous bleeding from traumatic injuries, applying powdered Pangolin Scales stops bleeding immediately; repeated uses were effective. It should be stir-fried with Araneus powder (Ge Fen) until thoroughly cooked; only when preparing medicated plasters is the raw form used.
Centipede (Wu Gong): Taste is slightly pungent, nature is slightly warm. Its penetrating power is the fastest. Internally reaching the Zang-Fu organs and externally reaching the meridians, it can open up any area where Qi and Blood are stagnant. Although it has slight toxicity, it excels at resolving toxins and can eliminate all kinds of sores, ulcers, and toxic conditions. Its nature is particularly good at dispelling wind. Internally, it treats stirring Liver Wind, epilepsy, vertigo, convulsions, and neonatal tetanus (Umbilical Wind); externally, it treats Wind-stroke of the meridians, facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), and numbness of the hands and feet. Since it can subdue snakes, it is also used to treat snake diseases and snakebite poisoning. For external application on corns (commonly known as chicken eyes), it is powdered and applied, combined with fresh Arisaema Rhizome (Nan Xing) powder mixed with vinegar, applied around the periphery. When used, it is best to include the head and feet; removing them reduces efficacy. Moreover, its original nature is not highly toxic, so the whole centipede can be used without hesitation.
[Attached Cases]
The young son of Mr. Chen from Fengtian, aged five, presented with high fever throughout the body, spasticity of the four limbs, and signs of convulsions. He was thirsty and craved water, with dry stools. This was identified as exogenous heat stirring up Liver Wind and Fire, rushing upward to the brain, causing the "brain qi tendons" to act recklessly and lose their normal controlling function. I administered Baihu Decoction (White Tiger Decoction), using one liang of Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao), plus one qian of Mint Leaves (Bo He Ye) and two qian of Uncaria Hook (Gou Teng), and two whole Centipedes (Wu Gong). Decocted into one cup of soup, taken in two doses warm. After one dose, convulsions stopped and spasticity relaxed. The Centipede was then removed, and after another dose, the fever completely subsided.
The infant son of the Na family from Fengtian, over one month old, presented with high fever and convulsions throughout the body. For two days, he did not suckle milk nor cry, appearing near death. He came to the clinic for treatment. Knowing the condition resembled the previous case, but considering his infancy, I planned to halve the dosage of Baihu Decoction. However, due to the severity of his convulsions, the amounts of Mint Leaves, Uncaria Hook, and Centipede remained the same. I added three whole Scorpions (Quan Xie). The medicine was decocted into one cup and slowly administered warm in small portions over time. After twelve hours, once the medication was fully administered, the convulsions ceased, and he resumed suckling and crying. The next day, I prescribed herbs to disperse wind, clear heat, and calm the Liver. One dose resulted in complete recovery. Two days later, a three-year-old child from the same clan presented with symptoms similar to Mr. Chen’s son. Treating him with the same prescription as Mr. Chen’s son resulted in a cure after one dose.
A boy surnamed Wu from Fengtian, over one hundred days old, presented with high fever throughout the body and occasional convulsions, though not severe. I administered Baihu Decoction, using six qian of Gypsum Fibrosum, plus one qian of Mint Leaves and one Centipede. The decoction was divided into three doses and administered. Completion of one dose led to recovery. All four cases occurred in the early part of late spring, separated by a few days, likely due to the influence of the same exogenous climatic factors.
A man in his thirties suddenly developed facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), with the affected side unable to blink. I used two whole Centipedes powdered, delivered with a decoction of five qian of Saposhnikovia Root (Fang Feng). Three doses resulted in complete recovery.
There was a patient with Yi-Ge dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) who found no relief from medication. Accidentally desiring alcohol, he drank a full pot of wine and recovered. Later, inspecting the pot, he found a large Centipede inside. He realized the cause of his recovery was not the wine itself, but the Centipede within it. Generally, Yi-Ge dysphagia is often caused by blood stasis in the upper epigastrium, forming a tangible obstruction (Western medicine calls this gastric cancer, describing the protrusion there as resembling rock). Since Centipede excels at resolving stasis, it could cure the condition. Observing this, Centipede should be considered an urgent necessity for treating Yi-Ge dysphagia. Because this matter is quite unusual, I record it here.
