Epileptic convulsions are among the most difficult conditions to treat because their root is deeply entrenched, making them hard to cure. In my usual practice regarding this condition, I have cured cases using only water from sharpening knives; I have cured cases using only bear gallbladder (Ursi Fellea); I have cured cases using only aloe (Aloe); and I have cured cases using Cizhu Wan [Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill] combined with Hematitum (Ochre). However, such treatment methods, while effective in many cases, also frequently fail, leaving me feeling uncertain about having full control over this condition. Later, I treated a woman surnamed Wang from Fengtian, who was nearly thirty years old and suffering from epileptic convulsions. Despite medical treatment for over a year without success, her condition deteriorated to daily attacks with severe intensity. Upon onset, she would exhibit manic laughter, followed by limb convulsions and unconsciousness. Her pulse was slippery and excess, particularly pronounced at the Guan position anteriorly. This indicated abundant phlegm-fire harassing upward into the Heart, causing the Shen (Spirit) to lose its residence, hence the manic laughter; the unceasing upward rush of phlegm-fire stimulated the brain nerves, disrupting their function, hence the limb convulsions and loss of sensation. Initially, I administered Dangtan Tang [Phlegm-Scouring Decoction], which I formulated myself, one dose every other day. After three doses, the severity lessened slightly, so I switched to pills. The formula consisted of Lead Sulfide, Raw Ochre, and Mirabilite, each two liang; Cinnabar, Indigo Naturalis, and Alum, each one liang; and Minium, five qian. These were ground into fine powder together. Then, four liang of raw Huai Shan Yao [Dioscoreae Rhizoma] were ground into fine powder, roasted thoroughly, and mixed with the other powders. Honey was refined to form pills weighing two qian each. One pill should be taken on an empty stomach with warm boiled water, twice daily. After taking one hundred pills, she was completely cured.
A student surnamed Liu from Fengtian had long suffered from epileptic convulsions. I had previously cured him using Antelope Horn (Saiga Tataricae Cornu) combined with herbs that clear fire, resolve phlegm, and calm the Liver. Two years later, the condition recurred, and re-administering the original formula proved ineffective. He was given this same pill formula instead. After finishing sixty pills, he was completely cured.
A village boy in Shenyang County, aged seven or eight, was restless and disturbed during nighttime sleep, showing signs resembling convulsions; this too was epileptic convulsion. He was also treated with this pill formula. After taking forty pills, he was completely cured.
This pill formula not only treats epileptic convulsions but is also highly effective for nervous system disorders. A certain Mr. Zhao from Fengtian, around fifty years old, had suffered for years from dizziness and mental confusion, spiritual agitation, and involuntary movements, with multiple treatments failing. He was also treated with this pill formula, except that Alum in the prescription was replaced with Borax, still using one liang. After taking one hundred pills, he was completely cured. Because this pill formula has proven effective repeatedly, it was named Yupian Pill [Epilepsy-Curing Pill]. The version where Borax replaces Alum is named Xishen Pill [Spirit-Calming Pill].
Attachment: Method for Preparing Lead Sulfide Use one jin each of pure black lead and fine sulfur powder. First, melt the lead in an iron pot. Then, sprinkle four or five liang of sulfur powder onto the molten lead. The sulfur will ignite; immediately stir-fry with an iron shovel. The molten lead will congeal into granular sand-like particles. For any remaining un-congealed portions, continue sprinkling sulfur powder upon them, ensuring the fire does not go out, while continuously stirring the molten lead until all parts have congealed into sand-like particles. After cooling, the resulting particles, which resemble lead-gray in color, are placed in a mortar and ground finely into powder. Discard any material that has formed cakes during grinding. Take the remaining powder and boil it three times, adding half a jin of Mirabilite dissolved in water each time, before incorporating it into medicinal preparations.
