2. Yin and Yang within Heaven and Earth generate the Five Elements (Wu Xing, five phases), each possessing its own distinct substance (Zhi) and Qi (vital energy). Substance is rooted in Earth, while Qi circulates in Heaven. The Five Elements distribute in accordance with the seasonal cycles. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water engage in mutual generation (Xiang Sheng); simultaneously, Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, and Metal controls Wood, engaging in mutual restriction (Xiang Ke). When any element becomes excessive and causes harm, a counteracting mechanism arises to balance it, thereby maintaining the process of generation and transformation, allowing all things to establish themselves and grow.
[Note] Once Heaven and Earth are established, Yin and Yang exist within them. Yang moves and transforms, while Yin remains still and unites, thereby generating the Five Elements. According to the He Tu numerology: One generates Water, Six completes it; Two generates Fire, Seven completes it; Three generates Wood, Eight completes it; Four generates Metal, Nine completes it; Five generates Earth, Ten completes it. This illustrates that each of the Five Elements has its own distinct substance. The East generates Wood, whose Qi is Wind; the South generates Fire, whose Qi is Heat; the Central region generates Earth, whose Qi is Dampness; the West generates Metal, whose Qi is Dryness; the North generates Water, whose Qi is Cold. This illustrates that each of the Five Elements has its own distinct Qi. On Earth, it manifests as Wood; in Heaven, it manifests as Wind; on Earth, it manifests as Fire; in Heaven, it manifests as Heat; on Earth, it manifests as Earth; in Heaven, it manifests as Dampness; on Earth, it manifests as Metal; in Heaven, it manifests as Dryness; on Earth, it manifests as Water; in Heaven, it manifests as Cold. This demonstrates that the substances of the Five Elements reside in Earth, while their Qi circulates in Heaven. Wood is positioned in the East, with Wind Qi distributing in Spring; Fire is positioned in the South, with Heat Qi distributing in Summer; Earth is positioned in the Center and four corner directions, with Dampness Qi distributing in Late Summer; Metal is positioned in the West, with Dryness Qi distributing in Autumn; Water is positioned in the North, with Cold Qi distributing in Winter. This shows how the Five Qi distribute in accordance with the order of the four seasons. As Zhou Dunyi stated: "Yang changes and Yin combines, giving rise to Water, Fire, Metal, and Earth. The Five Qi distribute smoothly, and the four seasons proceed." Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood again. This is the mutual generation of the Five Elements, primarily responsible for nourishing all things. Wood restricts Earth, Earth restricts Water, Water restricts Fire, Fire restricts Metal, and Metal restricts Wood. This is the mutual restriction of the Five Elements, primarily responsible for controlling (or suppressing) all things. Pure restriction leads to death, whereas regulated restriction allows for life. If Wood becomes excessive, it harms Earth; if Earth becomes excessive, it harms Water; if Water becomes excessive, it harms Fire; if Fire becomes excessive, it harms Metal; if Metal becomes excessive, it harms Wood. This represents restricting the element one overcomes. However, the child element generated by the element one overcomes is precisely the element one cannot overcome. Fearing that this child element will come to rescue its mother and stop the harm, one does not act recklessly but accepts the restriction. With restriction comes generation and transformation, allowing each element to maintain its proper virtue, thereby nourishing all things without exception. For instance, if Wood Qi is excessively excessive, Earth suffers harm; this means I am restricting what I normally overcome. However, the child of Earth is Metal, which will receive this trend and restrict Wood. Thus, I fear Metal, which I cannot normally overcome, and naturally accept its restriction, leading to generation and transformation. If Fire Qi is excessively excessive, Metal is restricted; the child of Metal is Water, which will receive and restrict Fire. If Earth Qi is excessively excessive, Water is restricted; the child of Water is Wood, which will receive and restrict Earth. If Metal Qi is excessively excessive, Wood is restricted; the child of Wood is Fire, which will receive and restrict Metal. If Water Qi is excessively excessive, Fire is restricted; the child of Fire is Earth, which will receive and restrict Water. The same applies to all Five Elements. This is why mutual generation does not lead to mutual destruction, and mutual restriction does not lead to mutual extinction. The principle of endless generation and transformation, through which all things find their life, lies herein. The principles of generation, restriction, control, and transformation among the Five Elements must not be ignored. (See Figures 3 and 4)
