11. The Central Motion (Zhong Yun, the dominant Five Phase movement governing a year) of the Guest Kinetic (Ke Yun, annually changing Five Phase movements) governs the entire year, while the Guest Qi (Ke Qi, the rotating Six Qi) of the Sovereign Heaven (Si Tian, ruling the first half of the year) and the Nether Spring (Zai Quan, ruling the second half of the year) governs the upper and lower halves respectively. When Qi (Guest Qi/Sovereign Heaven) generates the Central Motion, it is called Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation). When the Motion (Central Motion) is controlled by Qi (Sovereign Heaven), it is called Tian Xing (Heavenly Punishment). When the Motion generates the Heavenly Qi (Sovereign Heaven), it is called Xiao Ni (Minor Rebellion). When the Motion controls the Sovereign Heaven, it is called Bu He (Disaccord) and Qian (Error). When Qi and Motion are identical, it is called Tian Fu Sui (Year of Heavenly Symbol); refer to Tian Fu Sui Hui for further details.
[Annotation] The first phase of the Guest Kinetic is precisely the Central Motion that governs the entire year. The Classics state: "In years of Jia and Ji, Earth Motion governs," and so forth. This refers to the aforementioned principle. Among the Guest Qi, the three phases of Sovereign Heaven constitute the Six Qi that govern the first half of the year; the Qi of the Nether Spring governs the second half of the year. The Classics state: "Before the middle of the year, Heavenly Qi governs; after the middle of the year, Earthly Qi governs." This refers to the aforementioned principle. Within the sixty-year cycle, when Upper (Qi) and Lower (Motion) encounter each other, there are instances of Xiang De (Harmony) and instances of Bu Xiang De (Discord). "Qi generating Central Motion" means Sovereign Heaven generates the Central Motion. For example, in Gui Si and Gui Hai years, Wood generates Fire; in Jia Zi, Jia Wu, Jia Yin, and Jia Shen years, Fire generates Earth; in Yi Chou and Yi Wei years, Earth generates Metal; in Xin Mao and Xin You years, Metal generates Water; in Ren Chen and Ren Xu years, Water generates Wood. In the sixty-year cycle, these twelve years feature Heavenly Qi generating Motion, with the upper generating the lower; thus, it is named Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation), representing harmonious years. "Motion being controlled by Qi" means Sovereign Heaven controls the Central Motion. For example, in Ji Si and Ji Hai years, Wood controls Earth; in Xin Chou and Xin Wei years, Earth controls Water; in Wu Chen and Wu Xu years, Water controls Fire; in Geng Zi, Geng Wu, Geng Yin, and Geng Shen years, Fire controls Metal; in Ding Mao and Ding You years, Metal controls Wood. In the sixty-year cycle, these twelve years feature Heavenly Qi controlling Motion, with the upper controlling the lower; thus, it is named Tian Xing (Heavenly Punishment), representing discordant years. "Motion generating Heavenly Qi" means the Central Motion generates the Sovereign Heaven. For example, in Gui Chou and Gui Wei years, Fire generates Earth; in Ren Zi, Ren Wu, Ren Yin, and Ren Shen years, Wood generates Fire; in Xin Si and Xin Hai years, Water generates Wood; in Geng Chen and Geng Xu years, Metal generates Water; in Ji Mao and Ji You years, Earth generates Metal. In the sixty-year cycle, these twelve years feature Motion generating Heavenly Qi, with the lower generating the upper. Although this is a case of generation, as the son sits above the mother, it is termed Xiao Ni (Minor Rebellion) and primarily leads to minor illnesses. "Motion controlling Sovereign Heaven" means the Central Motion controls the Sovereign Heaven. For example, in Yi Si and Yi Hai years, Metal controls Wood; in Bing Zi, Bing Wu, Bing Yin, and Bing Shen years, Water controls Fire; in Ding Chou and Ding Wei years, Wood controls Earth; in Gui Mao and Gui You years, Fire controls Metal; in Jia Chen and Jia Xu years, Earth controls Water. In the sixty-year cycle, these twelve years feature Motion controlling Heavenly Qi, with the lower controlling the upper; thus, it is named Bu He (Disaccord), which is also discordant and primarily leads to severe illnesses. "Qi and Motion being identical" occurs when both are Wood, such as in Ding Si and Ding Hai years; both are Fire, such as in Wu Zi, Wu Wu, Wu Yin, and Wu Shen years; both are Earth, such as in Ji Chou and Ji Wei years; both are Metal, such as in Yi Mao and Yi You years; both are Water, such as in Bing Chen and Bing Xu years. In the sixty-year cycle, these twelve years have identical Qi and Motion, all classified as Tian Fu (Heavenly Symbol). Although they share the same Qi, there cannot be an absence of excessive dominance and harmful hyperactivity (Figure 16). As for Tai Yi Tian Fu (Supreme Heavenly Symbol) and Sui Hui (Year Meeting) years, they are detailed separately later.
