[Upper Compilation External Treatment Methods - General Discussion on Appliances]
[1] Regarding injuries from falls and blows, although manipulative techniques are used for treatment, it is feared that the effects may not be entirely appropriate, leading to the suffering of "treated as if untreated." This would imply that the medical principles are not comprehensive or detailed.
[2] Therefore, based on the anatomical features of the upper and lower body, as well as the anterior and posterior aspects, appliances are fabricated to correct deformities. These serve to assist manipulative techniques where they fall short, aiming to reunite separated bones, straighten misaligned structures, level protrusions, and elevate depressions to their normal positions.
[3] In this way, critical conditions can be stabilized, and severe injuries can be mitigated. Combined with the efficacy of internal herbal medicine and proper guidance on convalescence, the methods of bone-setting become complete.
[Upper Compilation External Treatment Methods - Head and Face]
[1] The Jiache Bone (Mandible), commonly known as the jaw hook, bears all the teeth and enables mastication. Due to its mobility, it is named Jiache.
[2] The tail end of this bone is shaped like a hook, which articulates upward into the ring-like structure at the angle of the jaw.
[3] Dislocation may result from trauma or be caused by wind-dampness invading the hook-and-ring joint. Unilateral dislocation is termed "Cuo" (misalignment), while bilateral dislocation is termed "Luo" (falling out).
[4] Treatment for dislocation:
<1> Use manual reduction for partial dislocations: Hold the chin with both hands, pull slightly outward, then push inward. This allows both hooks to re-enter the upper sockets.
<2> Secure the area by wrapping a cloth bandage from the chin over the top of the head.
<3> Internally administer Zhenggu Zijin Dan (Orthopedic Purple Gold Pill) and externally apply Wanling Gao (Ten Thousand Efficacy Plaster).
<4> Once the patient can eat, remove the main bandage but continue using a chin strap tied to the top of the head. Recovery typically occurs within two to three days.
[5] If bilateral dislocation occurs, the treatment method is the same as above. If dislocation results from yawning, it is considered a subluxation due to sliding, which is generally harmless.
[6] Dislocation is colloquially known as "hanging jaw." Yawning is colloquially known as "opening mouth wide."
