[Text 1]
The *Ling Shu: Bie Pian of the Meridians* states: The Foot-Shaoyin [Kidney] meridian ascends to the middle of the popliteal fossa, branches off to join the Taiyang [Bladder] meridian and merges with it, then ascends to the Kidney. At the level of the fourteenth thoracic vertebra, it emerges and connects to the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel) (see Figure 80).
The *Nan Jing (Classic of Difficult Issues)*, Chapter 28, states: The Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] originates from the hypochondriac region and encircles the body once.
[Text 2]
The Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] is connected to the Foot-Shaoyin [Kidney] meridian; ascending to the popliteal fossa, it branches to the Taiyang [Bladder] meridian, merges with the Kidney and the fourteenth vertebra, and connects to the Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel], originating from the hypochondriac region and circulating around the body.
Note: [1] The Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] originally arises from the Qi of the Foot-Shaoyin [Kidney] meridian. Ascending to the middle of the popliteal fossa, it branches to the Taiyang [Bladder] meridian, merges with it at the Kidney, and at the level of the fourteenth vertebra, emerges to connect to the Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel]. Therefore, it originates from the hypochondriac region and circulates around the body once.
[Text 3]
The Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] originates from the Dai Mai (Dai Mai, GB26) acupoint of the Foot-Shaoyang [Gallbladder] meridian, winding between the Wushu (Wushu, GB27) and Weidao (Weidao, GB28) acupoints. Below the Jingmen (Jingmen, GB25) acupoint, it resides above a certain location, encircling the hypochondriac region like a belt.
Note: [1] The principal branch of the Foot-Shaoyin [Kidney] meridian emerges from the Ran Gu (Rangu, KI2) acupoint and follows the posterior aspect of the medial malleolus; its branch enters the heel, ascends along the medial aspect of the lower leg [text missing], reaches the middle of the popliteal fossa, branches to merge with the Taiyang [Bladder] meridian, ascends to the Shen Qi (Shenqi, BL23) acupoint, inside the level of the fourteenth vertebra, meets with the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) of the Foot-Shaoyin [Kidney] meridian. Externally, it meets with the Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] of the Foot-Shaoyang [Gallbladder] meridian, does not travel together with the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel), emerges from the hypochondriac region, and connects to the Dai Mai (Dai Mai, GB26) acupoint of the Foot-Shaoyang [Gallbladder] meridian.
[2] Thus, the *Nan Jing* states: "The Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] originates from the hypochondriac region." "Encircling the body once" means that it originates from the Dai Mai (Dai Mai, GB26) acupoint of the Foot-Shaoyang [Gallbladder] meridian, travels through the Wushu (Wushu, GB27) and Weidao (Weidao, GB28) acupoints, does not pass through the Juliao [missing character, likely Jūliáo, GB29] acupoint, and circles back like a belt; hence it is called the Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel].
[Text 4]
The portion of the Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] belongs to the Foot-Shaoyang [Gallbladder] meridian; one cun eight fen below the Jixiong (Jixiong, GB24) acupoint in the hypochondriac region is its location. Three cun below the Dai Mai (Dai Mai, GB26) acupoint is the Wushu (Wushu, GB27) acupoint. Descending from the Wushu (Wushu, GB27) acupoint, passing five cun three fen below the Zhangmen (Zhangmen, LR13) acupoint of the Liver meridian, is the Weidao (Weidao, GB28) acupoint.
Note: [1] The portion of the Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] is located one cun eight fen below the Jixiong (Jixiong, GB24) acupoint of the Foot-Shaoyang [Gallbladder] meridian, which is the Dai Mai (Dai Mai, GB26) acupoint.
[2] Three cun below the Dai Mai (Dai Mai, GB26) acupoint is the Wushu (Wushu, GB27) acupoint.
[3] Descending from the Wushu (Wushu, GB27) acupoint, five cun three fen below the Zhangmen (Zhangmen, LR13) acupoint of the Liver meridian is the Weidao (Weidao, GB28) acupoint (Figure 81).
