[Formula Song] Yuan Ju (Deep Abscess) arises from worry and resentment affecting the Liver and Gallbladder. It manifests as hardness, swelling, and pain below the ribs. If it ulcerates with a sound indicating perforation of the inner membrane, Hu Mo San (Membrane-Protecting Powder) should be taken before ulceration.
[Annotation] This condition is caused by excessive worry and resentment, injuring both the Liver and Gallbladder channels. It occurs below the ribs; initially, it is hard, swollen but not red. After a long time, it ulcerates. The discharge of thick white pus indicates a favorable prognosis (Shun), whereas discharge resembling bean curd dregs indicates a dangerous prognosis (Xian). A sound emanating from the wound, resembling an infant's cry, indicates perforation of the inner membrane. At this point, moxibustion of fourteen burns (two sets of seven) at Yanglingquan (GB34) will stop the sound. The acupoint is located in the depression one cun below the lateral aspect of the patella, accessible by squatting or sitting. Both internal and external treatments are the same as those for Rib Abscess. For any carbuncle or abscess occurring in soft, hollow areas such as the ribs, chest, hypochondrium, waist, or abdomen, frequent administration of Hu Mo San during the pre-ulcerative stage can prevent the hazard of membrane perforation.
Formula: Hu Mo San (Membrane-Protecting Powder)
Composition: Beeswax (Cera Flava) and Bletilla Rhizome (Baiji) in equal parts.
Grind into a fine powder. Take 1 qian for mild cases, 2 qian for moderate cases, and 3 qian for severe cases. Mix with yellow wine for administration; rice soup may also be used.
[Formula Song] Hu Mo San contains two ingredients: Beeswax and Bletilla ground into fine powder. Mixed with wine or rice soup, taking it beforehand prevents membrane perforation.
[Formula Song] Dan Du (Erysipelas) arises from extreme heat generating wind in the Liver and Spleen. It appears above the ribs and on the hips/waist with a red hue like rosy clouds, wandering like mist, and burning pain. Urgent scarification should be performed around the red and swollen area to release purple-black blood, followed by applying slices of lean beef (or mutton) to reduce toxicity by half. Initially, administer Shuang Gui Jin Wan (Double-Resolving Precious Gold Pill) to induce sweating, followed by Hua Ban Jie Du Tang (Spot-Transforming Detoxifying Decoction). If the prescription matches the disease, the prognosis is favorable. However, if vomiting, hiccups, coma, or ulceration occur, accompanied by abdominal distension and generalized cyanosis, it indicates internal attack of toxic qi, which is unfavorable (Ni).
Formula: Hua Ban Jie Du Tang (Spot-Transforming Detoxifying Decoction)
Composition: Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Forsythiae Fructum (Lianqiao, heart removed), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi, stir-fried and ground), Humanis Excrementis Depuratum (Renzhonghuang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), and Panacis Quinquefolii Radix Nigra (Heishen) — each 1 qian; twenty leaves of Bambusa Leaves (Zhuye). Decoct with one zhong of water until reduced to eight-tenths, then take warm.
[Formula Song] Hua Ban Jie Du Tang treats wind generated by heat causing Erysipelas, characterized by cloud-like red patches. It contains Shengma, Shigao, Lianqiao, Niubangzi, Renzhonghuang, Huanglian, Zhimu, and Heishen.
Another Formula: Shuang Gui Jin Wan (See Chapter on Ulcers and Sores)
