Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Decoction)

The formula Danggui San consists of Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus Pericarpium), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Peng'ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma).
[Note] Women suffering from *shan* disease, characterized by qi attacking and stabbing pain, are mostly due to wind-cold and damp-cold pathogens lodging in the uterine gate and blood chamber. Therefore, these diseases belong to the Jueyin Liver Meridian, and it is suitable to use Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Decoction). This formula consists of Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus Pericarpium), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Peng'ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma).
11. When the constitution is deficient but the pathogenic factor is excessive, first support the righteous qi; when both the constitution and the syndrome are excess, urgently eliminate the pathogenic factor. For large accumulations and aggregations, stop the attack when half has subsided; one must know that nourishing the righteous qi will cause the accumulation to disappear spontaneously.
[Note] In treating all kinds of *zheng* and *ji* accumulations, one should first examine whether the body is strong or weak, and whether the disease progression is slow or urgent, then treat accordingly. If the person is deficient, meaning qi and blood are weakened and cannot tolerate attacking methods, even if the disease progress is vigorous, one should first support the righteous qi, and then treat the disease; if both the physical condition and the syndrome indicate excess, one should first attack the pathogenic factor. The Classics state: "For large accumulations and aggregations, cease treatment when half has subsided," fearing that excessive attacking would damage qi and blood. Luo Tianyi said: "Nourishing the righteous qi causes the accumulation to disappear spontaneously," which can be said to have grasped the essence of the Classics.
