Translation:
The pupil (Tongshen) shrinks to the size of a needle, caused by exhaustion and injury to essence and blood, damaging the Kidney and Liver. Vision is not significantly blurred, but there is only photophobia (fear of light) and a dull, dry discomfort. Treatment should employ Qing Shen Yi Yang Wan (Clear Kidney and Suppress Yang Pill) to clear Kidney fire and suppress deficient Yang.
Formula: Qing Shen Yi Yang Wan (Clear Kidney and Suppress Yang Pill)
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, processed with salt water), 2 liang; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried with wine), 2 liang; Caojueming (Cassiae Semen, stir-fried), 1 liang; Baifuling (Poria, white), 2 liang; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine and stir-fried), 1 liang; Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), 2 liang; Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried with wine), 1 liang; Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), 8 qian; Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, processed with salt water), 2 liang; Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), 2 liang; Hanshuishi (Calcitum, ground separately), 2 liang.
Grind the above herbs into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills, sized like tung tree seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, administered on an empty stomach with warm boiled water.
[Note] [1] "Shrinking pupil" refers to the gradual shrinking of the pupil to the size of a hairpin tip, or even as small as a needle point in severe cases.
[2] This condition results from excessive sexual activity and fatigue injuring essence and blood, leading to deficiency in the Kidney and Liver meridians.
[3] The symptoms include vision that is not severely blurred, but rather photophobia and a sensation of dull pain and dryness. It is appropriate to use Qing Shen Yi Yang Wan (Clear Kidney and Suppress Yang Pill) to nourish Yin (strengthen water) to control hyperactive Yang.
Why are the Nine Needles named so? Their origin lies in the great numbers of Heaven and Earth, starting from one and ending at nine, corresponding to Heaven, Earth, Man, Time, Sound, Law, Stars, Wind, and Fields.
Wind and fields comprise eighty-one divisions (9x9); the number of needles corresponds to this count, originating from the Huangzhong pitch pipe.
Skin, flesh, sinews, vessels, voice, Yin-Yang, teeth, Qi, nine orifices, and joints are all interconnected.
[Note] [1] In the *Ling Shu: Jiu Zhen* chapter, the Yellow Emperor asked: How were the Nine Needles created? What is their origin and name?
[2] Qibo replied: They are based on the great numbers of Heaven and Earth, starting from one and ending at nine. The first needle models Heaven, the second models Earth, the third models Man, the fourth models the Seasons, the fifth models the Five Tones, the sixth models the Six Laws (pitch pipes), the seventh models the Seven Stars, the eighth models the Eight Winds, and the ninth models the Nine Fields.
[3] The Nine Needles were established by sages according to the numbers of Heaven and Earth, from one to nine. Nine times nine equals eighty-one, establishing the base number for Huangzhong. The number of needles corresponds to this, and the human body also corresponds to it.
[4] Skin corresponds to Heaven, flesh to Earth, blood vessels to Man, sinews to the Seasons, voice to the Five Tones, Yin-Yang to the Six Laws, teeth and facial features to the Seven Stars, Qi to the Eight Winds, and the nine orifices and three hundred sixty-five collaterals to the Nine Fields. This is the way Heaven and Man are connected.
[5] Therefore, the first needle treats the skin, the second treats the flesh, the third treats the vessels, the fourth treats the sinews, the fifth treats the bones, the sixth regulates Yin and Yang, the seventh benefits essence, the eighth dispels wind, and the ninth opens the nine orifices and removes pathogenic factors of the three hundred sixty-five solar terms. Each needle has its specific primary indications.
