Fengzhen (Sharp Needle) is the modern three-edged needle, primarily used to puncture and treat neoplastic pathogens (tumors/pathological masses) and stagnation caused by seasonal epidemic qi. When pathogens manifest in the meridians and are stubborn and difficult to resolve, using Fengzhen to drain heat and bleed allows Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi) to flow freely.
[Note] Item 4: Diagram of the Fengzhen
[1] The Classic states: The Fengzhen is modeled after the cotton-picking needle, with a blade having three edges (triangular cross-section), one cun six fen in length.
The upper part extends eight fen from the tip, leaving the lower eight fen unsharpened.
[2] "Three edges" implies the blade is straight, robust, and sharp, suitable for draining heat and bleeding.
[3] Fengzhen corresponds to the modern three-edged needle, mainly used for puncturing conditions such as seasonal warm-heat pathogens and neoplastic pathogens.
[4] For any disease characterized by stagnation and stubbornness within the meridians, the sharpness of the three-edged needle is used to drain heat and bleed,
thereby opening the meridians, harmonizing Ying and Wei, and curing the stagnant and stubborn ailments.
The tip of the Pizhen (Broadsword Needle) resembles a sword, primarily used to puncture conditions where cold and heat struggle against each other, combining to form abscesses with pus already established; draining large amounts of pus restores harmony immediately.
[Note] Item 5: Diagram of the Pizhen
[1] The Classic states: The Pizhen is modeled after the edge of a sword, two-and-a-half fen wide, four cun long.
[2] Its dimensions of two-and-a-half fen wide and four cun long, resembling a sword's edge, are designed to facilitate opening and draining.
[3] The tip of the Pizhen being sword-like is primarily used to puncture conditions where cold and heat contend, or where pathogens stagnate in Ying and Wei, causing obstruction,
leading to carbuncles and sores with established pus; this needle is used to incise and extract large amounts of pus.
[4] Draining large amounts of pus harmonizes Yin and Yang, thereby curing the carbuncle and heat.
Yuanli Zhen (Round-Sharp Needle) is shaped sharply like yak hair, primarily treating deficiency pathogens lodging in the meridians, causing sudden bi-syndrome, wandering pain, and joint pain; upon needling, the meridians become patent and pain resolves instantly.
[Note] Item 6: Diagram of the Yuanli Zhen
[1] The Classic states: The Yuanli Zhen is modeled after the Mao needle, slightly larger at the tip and narrower in the body,
one cun six fen in length.
[2] It is modeled after Mao (yak hair); since strong hair is called Mao, its fine and sturdy nature allows for deeper insertion.
[3] The Yuanli Zhen has a sharp, round, and pointed tip resembling Mao,
primarily treating sudden bi-syndrome, wandering pain, and joint pain caused by deficiency pathogens lodging in the meridians.
[4] Needling with this instrument promotes the free flow of the meridians, causing deficiency pathogens to depart naturally.
