According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), Zhong'e (sudden attack by evil qi) occurs when a person's spirit is weak and is suddenly invaded by ghostly or evil qi. The condition presents with sudden stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, chest oppression, mental confusion, and even syncope or impending death.
*Guangji Fang* (Broad Aid Prescriptions) records a formula for treating sudden onset of nausea, stabbing abdominal pain, and expelling evil qi:
Moschus (1 fen, ground) Rhinocerotis Cornu (2 fen) Lignum Aromaticum (2 fen)
Grind these into powder. Take one cun bi (a measure equivalent to a teaspoon) on an empty stomach with warm water. Recovery will be immediate.
*Fan Wang Fang* records the Sanwu Beijii Wan (Three-Ingredient Emergency Pill) for treating sudden death, as well as heart pain, abdominal fullness, sleep paralysis, or Zhong'e:
Crotonis Fructus (1 fen, remove heart and skin) Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (2 fen) Zingiberis Radix Preparata (2 fen)
Crush the Crotonis Fructus together with the other two ingredients, grind and mix, then form pills using honey, sized like soybeans. In emergencies, take 2–3 pills mixed with water. If the jaw is clenched, pry it open to administer the medicine.
Another prescription: Take a cup of water, pierce it 7 to 21 times with a knife, and drink it. This is effective.
The Beiji San (Emergency Powder) from *Jilue Fang* treats sudden Zhong'e, heart pain, abdominal fullness, desire to vomit, and shortness of breath:
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (2 liang, preferably golden-colored) Cinnamomi Ramulus (4 fen) Crotonis Fructus (100 seeds)
Grind and sieve the three ingredients together. Take 1 qian (approx. 3-5g) and administer with 7 he (approx. 140ml) of water.
*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides formulas for sudden death and Zhong'e:
Drink the juice from fresh cow or horse manure. If fresh manure is unavailable, mix dried manure with water and drink.
Another prescription: Insert the yellow center of a green onion into the nostril until bleeding occurs; this leads to recovery.
Another prescription: Moxibustion on both hypochondriac regions.
Another prescription: Moxibustion on the Weiwuan (epigastric region) for 15 moxa cones.
*Jiyan Fang* (Collected Verified Prescriptions) treats Zhong'e:
Take 14 Soybean seeds, mix with the yolk of one egg and half sheng (approx. 100ml) of white wine, and consume in one dose.
Another prescription: Use soot from the bottom of a cauldron and salt (amount held by three fingers), mix with water, and ingest. (*Yimen Fang* agrees with this.)
Another prescription: Measure the distance between the centers of the two breasts. Bend this length from the nipple backward toward the intercostal space. Apply moxibustion at the end of the string. The number of moxa cones should correspond to the patient's age.
Another prescription: Moxibustion on the Weiwuan (epigastric region) for 50 moxa cones.
*Guangli Fang* (Broad Benefit Prescriptions) treats Zhong'e and Ke Wu (intruding evil qi) in critical condition:
Moschus (weight of 1 qian), ground, mixed with 2 he (approx. 40ml) of vinegar, taken orally. Recovery follows immediately.
*Ge Shi Fang*, attributed to Hua Tuo, treats sudden Zhong'e with shortness of breath and impending death:
Allii Tuberosi Radix (1 bundle) Mume Fructus (10 pieces) Evodiae Fructus (half sheng, approx. 100ml)
Decoct in Lao Shui (labor water, water carried while walking) one dou (approx. 1 liter). Boil three times, inserting the patient's comb each time. If the comb floats, the patient lives; if it sinks, the patient dies. Decoct to obtain 3 sheng (approx. 600ml) and administer.
Another prescription: Moxibustion on the posterior hairy area behind the nail of both big toes, 14 cones on each side, leads to recovery.
*Xinlu Fang* (Newly Recorded Prescriptions) treats sudden Zhong'e:
Fermented Soybean (1 sheng, approx. 200g) Salt (7 he, approx. 140ml) Water (4 sheng, approx. 800ml)
Decoct to obtain 1.2 sheng (approx. 240ml). Divide into two doses.
Another prescription: Cut Pericarpium Nucleus Persicae (white bark layer) 1 sheng, add 2 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 0.8 sheng, take once.
Another prescription: Cut fresh Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma 3 sheng, crush and squeeze out the juice, take 0.4–0.5 sheng.
Another prescription: Take Peach Kernel powder (one cun bi) with wine. Apricot Kernel powder is also good.
Another prescription: Take Longgu (dragon bone/Fulonggan, calcined stalagmitic earth) powder, take two cun bi with water.
Another prescription: Take insect frass from bamboo or wood, take one cun bi with water.
