The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: The Kidney governs the lower back. If the Kidney meridian is deficient and damaged, Wind-Cold pathogens may invade it, thus causing lower back pain. Furthermore, if pathogenic factors lodge in the collaterals of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, it causes lower back pain and injury to the waist.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) states: One should not lie down immediately after eating; doing so over time leads to Qi disorders, resulting in painful lower backache.
It also states: Excessive laughter can cause the Kidney to shift or malfunction, leading to lower back pain.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) contains the Duzhong Wine Prescription for treating five types of lower back pain:
Sanjisheng (Taxilli Herba), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Lurong (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus).
These four herbs are taken in equal proportions, ground into powder, and administered as one "Fangcunbi" (a measure roughly equivalent to a square inch spoonful) per dose, three times daily.
Another prescription: For treating lower back and spinal pain with limited mobility:
Take deer antler, remove the outer epidermis, and use only the white interior. Roast it until yellowish, grind into powder, and take with wine, one "Fangcunbi" per dose, three times daily. Raw fish is strictly prohibited; other foods are allowed. Fresh deer antler is preferred; aged ones are less effective.
The *Luyan Fang* (Verified Prescriptions) treats severe lower back and leg pain that is unbearable and prevents standing. Huma San (Sesame Powder) Prescription:
Take sesame seeds, roast them until fragrant, crush them in a mortar, and sift through gauze multiple times. If not sifted sufficiently, the oil will leak out, making sifting impossible. It is recommended to take this with meals. Honey water, soup, or gravy can be used to swallow it, with no dietary restrictions.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Prescriptions) describes moxibustion for lower back pain:
Have the patient stand upright. Place a bamboo stick against the ground and measure up to the navel. Use this length as a guide to locate the point on the spine directly opposite the navel on the back. Perform moxibustion at this point on the spine, with the number of moxa cones (Zhuang) corresponding to the patient's age. After moxibustion, store the bamboo stick away and do not carry it.
Additionally, moxa points located one cun lateral to the midline on both sides should be treated, creating three horizontal points spaced one cun apart.
Also, treat the "Xiao Xie" (Minor Evil) located at the "Yao Mu" (Eye of the Waist), which is found in the depressions on either side above the sacrum.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Ge Family Prescriptions) treats sudden lower back pain preventing flexion and extension:
Have the patient stand upright. Measure from the sole of the foot to the navel using a bamboo stick. Break the bamboo stick and use it to measure backwards from the feet to the back, locating the midpoint of the spine. Moxa the point corresponding to the head end of the bamboo stick on the back, with the number of Zhuang corresponding to the patient's age.
Another prescription: At one cun above the coccyx (Qionggu), perform seven Zhuang of moxibustion. Also, perform seven Zhuang at points one cun to the left and right of this point.
The *Fan Wang Fang* treats sudden severe lower back pain with stiffness, spasms, and inability to breathe deeply. If contracted after drunkenness or overeating, causing extreme suffering, use the Dadou Zi Tang (Black Soybean Decoction):
Dadou (Glycine Max Seed), roasted until charred (one dou); Hao Jiu (Good Wine), two dou.
Boil these two ingredients together until hot and boiling. Administer according to the patient's tolerance, drinking until intoxicated.
The *Yimen Fang* (Medical Gate Prescriptions) treats sudden lower back pain preventing turning or side-lying:
Take one deer antler, five to six cun long, and cut it. Heat the deer antler until red-hot, then immerse it in wine. When it cools and dries, return it to the wine. Repeat this process several times.
