The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: Generally, there are nine types of parasites within the human abdomen. When Qi and Blood are deficient, these parasites invade and consume the body. Among them, when Ascaris lumbricoides (pinworms) act up, they are most capable of generating sores, which subsequently become carbuncles (deep abscesses) and tinea (fungal skin infections).
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides formulas for treating alopecia capitis (scalp baldness):
Crush Brassica rapa var. trichosperma seeds into powder, mix with vinegar, and apply to the affected area once daily.
Another formula: Grind iron rust (Ferrum Oxidatum) with oil, apply to the area, and hair will grow back immediately.
Yet another formula: Take three sheng of Cannabis sativa seeds, crush them, soak in rice washing water overnight, strain off the dregs, and wash the hair once daily; hair may grow two chi in one month.
It also states: For treating white tinea capitis (white ringworm of the scalp):
Boil the juice from peach bark, drink it, and use it to wash the affected area.
Another formula: Sift Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) and Douchi (Fermented Soybeans) into fine powder, mix with vinegar, and apply to the affected area.
Yet another formula: Stir-fry soybeans until black, crush into powder, mix with suet (pig fat), scoop onto the affected area with a hot spoon, cover immediately, and avoid exposure to wind.
Yet another formula: Mix peach blossoms with suet and apply as a sealant to the affected area.
The *Jiyao Fang* (Extremely Important Prescriptions) treats head wind itching with excessive white scales:
Cannabis sativa seeds (three sheng, crushed), Zanthoxylum bungeanum (two sheng), Platycladi Cacumen (three sheng, cut).
Place all ingredients in rice washing water and soak overnight. Warm them up early the next morning, strain off the dregs, and use this liquid to wash the hair. (Note: According to the *Jiyan Fang*, Platycladi Cacumen is not included.)
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Chi tu (red tinea capitis) (this condition arises from head sores where parasites eat away at the hair causing loss) presents without white crusts, has exudate, red skin, and itching, hence it is called Chi tu.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats Chi tu:
Wash the head with ash juice from mulberry branches, mash mulberries to apply as a poultice, and expose the head to the sun at noon.
Another formula: Crush horse hoof ash into powder, mix with suet, and apply.
Yet another formula: Burn cattle and sheep horns to ash, mix with suet, and apply.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: When Wind pathogen enters the head, specifically in areas of deficiency, hair falls out and muscle tissue becomes withered and dead. The area of hair loss may be as large as a coin or as large as a finger.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats "Ghost-Licked Head" (a type of alopecia areata):
Burn cat feces, mix with winter-month pig fat, and apply to the affected area.
Another formula: Burn Moschus (musk), crush into powder, and apply.
Yet another formula: Crush red bricks into powder, mix with garlic by pounding, and apply.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Hair growth is nourished and maintained by Qi and Blood. In areas burned by fire, scar tissue becomes dense, causing Qi and Blood to sink downward, unable to nourish and circulate through the Couli (skin pores and interstitial spaces); therefore, hair does not grow.
The *Ruyi Fang* method for promoting hair growth:
Take bird viscera, bury them three chi deep in Bingding soil (soil from the south direction), and after one hundred days, use this substance to smear on human flesh, and hair will grow.
Another formula: Apply good quality honey.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats hair loss due to burn scars:
Typhae Pollen (Puhui), mixed with Willow Catkin Brain (Liunaonao, likely referring to young willow buds or sap) harvested in the first lunar month, apply to the area, and hair will grow. Another formula: Crush Brassica rapa var. trichosperma seeds into powder, mix with vinegar, apply, and hair will grow.
