The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Shi Yong (Stone Abscess, a type of hard abscess resembling stone) is formed when cold pathogen invades the muscles, obstructs the flow of Qi and Blood, and causes condensation and accumulation. The swelling and induration are solid and firm, firmly rooted, with the skin adhering closely to the mass. It is not very hot, presents with slight pain, and any fever subsides spontaneously. This condition is characterized by excess cold and deficient heat, being as hard as stone; hence it is called Shi Yong. After a long time, if heat pathogen attacks it, pus will eventually form.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short-Form Prescriptions) states: In cases of Shi Yong, initially the skin and nodule are slightly firm and adhere to each other, without redness or a pointed head, presenting with slight pain and heat, which gradually subsides spontaneously. It then becomes extremely hard like stone, thus referred to as Shi Yong difficult to resolve, and it does not ripen spontaneously; even if it ripens, it may take around one hundred days. At the onset, administer Fangji Lianqiao Tang (Stephania and Forsythia Decoction), puncture to drain Qi and relieve stagnation, and apply Lianshi Bo (a plaster made from processed stone). With continued application over days, it can dissipate. If treatment is delayed, it cannot be resolved. If pus has already formed, applying this plaster will facilitate rapid rupture. For superficial pus, fire needle therapy is suitable. After the rupture of various abscesses, apply ointments and powders according to the method appropriate for the urgency of the condition. At the initial stage, applying a paste made from Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis) powder also promotes resolution.
Prescription for treating abscess induration, hard as stone or like a large kernel, with unchanged color, or for Shi Yong that fails to resolve:
Lu Jiao (Deer Horn) 8 liang (calcined to ash), Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix) 2 liang, coarse yellow whetstone slice 1 jin. Heat the stone until extremely red, immerse it in 5 sheng of vinegar, and reheat. After heating, immerse it again in vinegar until the vinegar reduces by half. Grind the stone into powder, mix with Deer Horn ash and Bai Lian powder, and combine with the remaining vinegar to form a mud-like consistency. Apply thickly to the abscess; reapply when dry to achieve resolution.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) prescription for treating Shi Yong that is hard as stone and does not suppurate:
Fresh Shanglu Root (Radix Phytolaccae Acinosae) crushed and applied externally; replace when dry. Also treats fistula and carbuncles. (Identical to the *Yimen Fang*).
Another prescription: Mix Scopolia Seed (Semen Hyoscyami) powder with vinegar and apply externally; this is also effective.
Generally, swelling that is extremely hard and has a root is termed Shi Yong.
Another prescription: Moxibustion should be applied at the affected area for one hundred moxa cones (zhuang); the stone particle will be expelled.
Another prescription: Dust from roof beams and ash from Malva stem in equal parts, mixed with vinegar and applied.
Another prescription: White bark of Shu Sang Root (Cortex Mori Radicis), dried in shade, ground into powder, mixed with gelatin, combined with wine, and applied to the site; application facilitates the expulsion of the stone or pus head.
