The *Fang Wang Fang* (Prescriptions of Fang Wang) for treating Gui Nue (Ghost Malaria):
Write "Dai Jiu Tian" (Wearing the Nine Heavens) with cinnabar on the forehead; write "Bao Jiu Di" (Embracing the Nine Earths) on the arms; write "Lv Jiu Jiang" (Treading the Nine Rivers) on the feet; write on the back: "In the south there is a high mountain, upon which stands a great tree. Below is stagnant water, within which resides a divine insect with three heads and nine tails. It does not eat the five grains but eats malaria ghosts, consuming three thousand in the morning and three hundred in the evening. Hurry, as if by imperial decree." Write on the chest: "Ascend the high mountain, gaze at the sea water. The Tingzhang (Station Chief) of the Heavenly Gate captures the malaria ghost; seize it and behead it immediately, do not inquire about guilt. Hurry, as if by imperial decree." (The *Chan Jing* [Classic of Childbirth] contains the same text.)
It also states: If the attack occurs at dawn, it is a ghost who died in the market, governed by Hengshan (Dichroa Root); after taking the medicine, hold a knife.
If the attack occurs at mealtime, it is a ghost who hanged himself, governed by Shumu (likely referring to a specific wood or herb, contextually linked to hanging); after taking the medicine, hold a rope.
If the attack occurs at noon, it is a ghost who drowned, governed by Dahuang (Rhubarb Root); after taking the medicine, hold a basin of water.
If the attack occurs in the late afternoon, it is a ghost of a lodging master, governed by Mahuang (Ephedra Herb); after taking the medicine, hold a millstone.
If the attack occurs at dusk, it is a female ghost, governed by Xixin (Asarum Root); after taking the medicine, hold a bright mirror.
If the attack occurs at midnight, it is a ghost crushed to death, governed by Huangqin (Scutellaria Root); after taking the medicine, hold a carriage cushion.
If the attack occurs at cockcrow, it is a child ghost, governed by Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root); after taking the medicine, hold herbs and grasses broken from a child's grave.
These seven substances, each one part, are finely ground and sifted. At the time of the attack, add one part of the specific governing herb for that condition. From dawn until the time of the attack, take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) dose with warm wine. After completing three doses, one must definitely hold the object associated with the governing herb; this is very effective and efficacious.
It also states: If the onset is at dawn, it is an outsider's folk ghost. Before the onset, let the patient hold their clothes as if bidding farewell, saying they wish to travel far away; the illness will then heal immediately.
If the onset is at mealtime, it is an outsider's dead ghost. Before the onset, let the patient claim they wish to return home, and flee under the bridge on the main road.
If the onset is near mid-morning, it is a market-dead ghost. Before the onset, let the patient bind their limbs, face north, expel Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), and perform ritual actions.
If the onset is at noon, it is a drowning ghost. Before the onset, let the patient place a basin of water in the courtyard, sit facing south, and expel Ying Qi.
If the onset is in the afternoon, it is the ghost of someone who died fleeing. Before the onset, let the patient have others announce that officials are coming to arrest them in the courtyard.
If the onset is in the late afternoon, it is the ghost of someone who hanged themselves. Before the onset, let the patient lie beneath the roof beam and use a rope around the patient's head.
If the onset is at sunset, it is the ghost of a slave or lodging master who died. Before the onset, let the patient flee to the rice-pounding area.
If the onset is at dusk, it is the ghost of a bandit who died. Before the onset, let the patient climb over walls and flee far away, so no one knows their home.
If the onset is at nightfall, it is a child ghost. Before the onset, let the patient break herbs and grasses from a child's grave; the illness will heal immediately.
If the onset is past midnight, it is the ghost of a prisoner. Before the onset, take the shackles and whips used by the Minister of Justice, let the patient hold them, and then... (text incomplete).

If the onset is at cockcrow, it is a nursing ghost. Before the onset, let the patient grasp... (text missing) a mat, close their eyes, and hold peach branches while expelling Ying Qi.
The *Ruyi Fang* (Prescription Satisfying All Wishes) for treating Gui Nue:
On the day of the attack, early in the morning, take well-water and write the character "Tian Yu" (Heavenly Prison) with cinnabar on the forehead; write "Xiong Yu" (Chest Prison) on the chest; write "Bei Yu" (Back Prison) on the back; make gestures with the left hand... (text incomplete).
