*Yimen Fang* records: To treat a person bitten by a rat, where swelling occurs all over the body and persists for months or even a year without healing, and red streaks radiate from the bite wound.
Take twelve cardamom pods (Doukou), cut them with the peel, decoct in two sheng of water until one sheng remains, remove the dregs, and drink it all at once. Chew the dregs and apply them topically to the sore; it will heal immediately.
*Bingyuan Lun* states: Whenever one is envenomed by a snake, one should not say "snake" directly, but refer to it as "insect" (Chong) or "ground rope" (Disuo), and avoid stating its specific name. There are many types of venomous snakes, and their toxicity varies greatly. In April and May, one is susceptible to the venom of green snakes; in March, to the venom of Canghui, Baijing, and Dayi snakes; in June and July, to the venom of Zhushou, Aifu, Heijia, Chimu, Huangkou, Angou, Bai [missing character], and Qingjiao snakes. These are all fierce snakes; if a bite is not treated immediately, death often ensues. It is also stated that there are types such as Chi [missing character] and Huanghan, totaling six or seven varieties. Black snakes found in water are called Gongli; a similar species exists in mountains, but neither is known to bite humans.
It is further said that there is a "Hook Snake" (Goushe) whose tail resembles a hook, capable of dragging humans and beasts into the water to drown and eat them.
It is also said that in the south, if a person is accidentally bitten by a Hook Snake and does not die, the snake will relentlessly pursue the victim for life. Even amidst a crowd of hundreds, it will strike directly; only fleeing more than one hundred li away can one escape.
It is also said that there is a "Drag Snake" (Tuoshe), seven or eight chi long, shaped like a dragged boat; bites from this snake are invariably fatal. One should shave off pieces of boat wood (or specific medicinal material implied by context), decoct the juice, and soak the wound; it will then heal.
It is also said regarding [missing character] poison: This refers to various venomous snakes. In summer, when their venom is abundant and cannot be discharged, they gnaw on grass and trees and spit venom onto them. If a person accidentally touches these plants, the toxicity is no different from a snakebite, except that the swelling will present spots resembling insect or snake eyes, which serves as a distinguishing feature.
It is also said that while a snakebite sore has not healed, one must avoid hot food, as consuming it may trigger a relapse.
*Bencao* states: Realgar (Xionghuang), Croton seed (Badou), Musk (Shexiang), and Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) can all antidote the venom of snakes and hundred insects.
*Ge Shi Fang* states: When envenomed by a snake, do not cross water; doing so will cause pain worse than the initial bite, whether traveling by cart or boat.
It further states methods for treating various snakebites:
Crush [missing character] grass and apply topically to the sore; it heals immediately and is highly effective.
Another prescription: Crush fresh Polygonum (Liao), extract the juice, drink a small amount, and apply the residue topically.
Another prescription: Apply [missing character] Qinglan topically.
Another prescription: Chew dried ginger (Ganjiang) and apply topically to the sore.
It is also said that for snakebite sores that have ulcerated and failed to heal for months: First wash the wound with salt water to remove necrotic tissue until bleeding stops. Then take Qianfu KT grass (note: original text contains rare characters), crush and sieve it, and apply topically to achieve healing.
It is also said for treating residual toxin lingering in the flesh after a snakebite sore has closed, causing pain and itching:
Take one sheng each of small garlic and large garlic, crush them together, pour hot water over them, use the resulting liquid to irrigate the sore (which is beneficial), or pound them into a thin paste for application (also beneficial).
It is also said for treating generalized severe edema caused by snakebites:
Take four or five dou of bran, place it in a large urn, sprinkle with water until the level is less than five sheng, then add good wine. Place on fire to generate steam, and fumigate the wound opening to expel the toxin, thereby reducing swelling.
*Seng Shen Fang* treats various snakebites:
Apply head scurf (Tougu) into the wound; it is very effective.
*Jiyao Fang* treats snakebites:
Hold Sichuan pepper (Jiao) and Shepherd's purse seedlings (Canger miao) in the mouth, crush them together, and apply topically to the sore.
Another prescription: Three he of raw Sichuan pepper (Shengjiao), four liang of good fermented soybeans (Chi), mix with human saliva, crush, and apply; symptoms stabilize immediately.
*Jiyan Fang* treats various snakebites:
Crush garlic and apply; it heals immediately.
*Guangli Fang* treats snakebite sores:
Realgar (Xionghuang, 4 fen), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, 6 fen), Musk (Shexiang, 1 fen, ground).
Crush and sieve, mix with vinegar, and apply topically to the sore.
Another prescription: Wash with warm wine, three times daily; it is effective.
*Longmen Fang* treats snakebites:
Burn honeycomb (Fangchao) to ash and apply as a sealant; it heals.
Another prescription: Crush pear and apply topically. (*Qipo Fang* agrees.)
It is also said for treating venom entering the abdomen:
Take a handful of Rumex leaves (Yangti cao ye), crush and extract juice, drink it; vomiting leads to recovery. (*Qipo Fang* agrees.)
*Qipo Fang* treats bites from vicious snakes:
Take bitter lettuce (Ku ju cai), crush and apply to the bite site. Drink one or two sheng of the juice to recover.
Another prescription: Crush the roots and stems of Plantago asiatica (Cheqian cao), apply topically; verified effective.
*Su Jing Bencao Zhu* states: For various snakebites, crush Achyranthes bidentata (Chongwei) and apply topically.
It is also said: For snakebites causing generalized swelling, crush Prunus pseudocerasus leaves (Yingtao ye) and apply as a poultice. Also extract and drink the juice.
*Yimen Fang* treats bites from snakes and vipers:
Immediately moxibustion (Jiu) fourteen grains (zhuang) at the bite site. Ignite Realgar (Xionghuang) and Musk (Shexiang) powder and apply topically, five or six times daily. If no medicine is available, perform moxibustion alone.
Another prescription: Cook Perilla frutescens leaves (Ren ye), crush thoroughly, mix with lard (Zhuzhi), and apply topically; it heals immediately.
