Baimao (White Horse Hair) (2 liang, mixed with Sichuan pepper and calcined overnight in Fu Huo [a specific heating method]. White horse hair treats leukorrhea; red horse hair treats hemorrorrhoeal leukorrhea) Gujia (Tortoise Shell) (4 liang, roasted with vinegar) Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell) (18 zhu, roasted with vinegar) Muli (Oyster Shell) (1 liang 10 zhu, roasted by fire)
Grind all together into powder. Take one fangcun bi [a small spoon-like measure] with wine for each dose, three times a day.
Treats hemorrorrhoeal and leukorreal discharge; this formula is effective.
When Qi sinks to the Lower Jiao, it results in leukorrhea. When Blood sinks to the Lower Jiao, it results in hemorrorrhoeal discharge. Using astringent herbs to stop the discharge will cause the remaining pathological discharge to remain inside without being expelled. Using purgative herbs to drain it will damage both the Middle Jiao and the Lower Jiao; neither is the correct treatment. The white horse embodies the rigidity of Heavenly Stems; hair is the surplus of Blood. Blood surplus can consolidate Blood; rigidity can promote the movement of Qi. Consolidating Blood stops hemorrorrhoeal discharge; promoting Qi movement cures leukorrhea. This is the rationale for using horse hair. Tortoise, turtle, and oyster shells are rigid externally but soft internally, corresponding to the Li Trigram (Fire). Removing the softness and utilizing the rigidity allows them to resolve masses (Zheng) and consolidate Qi. Resolving masses prevents the formation of leukorreal/hemorrorrhoeal discharge from lingering internally. Consolidating Qi prevents the sinking of Ying and Wei Qi. If Ying Qi does not sink, there is no hemorrorrhoeal discharge; if Wei Qi does not sink, there is no leukorrhea.

This formula is the primary treatment for Ezu [nausea and vomiting during pregnancy].
Ezu refers to nausea that obstructs food intake. This condition arises because Qi and Blood in the lower part are deficient, and they further borrow Qi from the Spleen and Stomach to nourish the fetal origin, causing the Spleen and Stomach to become weak and unable to handle the Qi of grains. Upon smelling the aroma of food, nausea occurs, obstructing diet. In this formula, Banxia and Shengjiang open the stomach and awaken the Spleen; Dihuang, Baishao, Xiong, and Xixin are acrid-sweet herbs that regulate Qi, capable of calming rebellious Qi and promoting food intake. One might ask: Banxia is contraindicated in pregnancy; why use it here? I reply: Ancients feared that long-term use would dry up Yin fluids, hence the contraindication. However, if symptoms of Ezu exist, its use is mandatory. Sun Simiao was a sage in medicine; among his formulas for nourishing the fetus, five contain Banxia.
