[Sheep Liver Pill]
Ye Ming Sha (Barn Swallow Droppings, cleaned), Chan Tui (Cicada Slough), Mu Zei (Equisetum Hiemale), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (each 1 liang), Yang Gan (Sheep Liver) (4 liang).
The aforementioned four herbs are ground into a fine powder. The sheep liver is boiled until soft and mashed into a paste. The powder is mixed into the paste, and pills the size of *Koelreuteria* seeds are formed. Take 50 pills with warm water after meals.
Xu Daoxiang, a resident of Dinghai in Mingzhou, was extremely filial to his mother. He suffered from red eyes and ate crab, which eventually led to internal cataracts. This condition lasted for five years. Despite his eye disease, his filial piety did not waver. Suddenly, he dreamed of a monk who taught him this prescription. After preparing and taking it, his vision was restored within one hundred days. Kun stated that Ye Ming Sha can eliminate evil blood in the eyes, Dang Gui Shen (the root body of Radix Angelicae Sinensis) can generate new blood in the eyes, Chan Tui can remove nebulae/opacities in the eyes, and Mu Zei can dissipate heat associated with opacities in the eyes. As for Sheep Liver, it utilizes the principle of "similar things attract," guiding the four herbs into the Liver organ to benefit the orifices. It was the power of filial piety that moved heaven, thus bringing forth this divine prescription; this is what is meant by sincerity moving heaven.
[Qi Qiao Brightening Eyes]
Sheng Yan's mother in the Jin Dynasty went blind and required feeding. Having been ill for a long time, her maids and servants were frequently beaten and scolded, harboring resentment. While Sheng Yan was out, they took Qi Qiao (Mallotus Larvatus larvae), roasted them, and fed them to the mother. The mother found the taste delicious and hid some to show Sheng Yan. Upon seeing this, Sheng Yan hugged his mother and wept bitterly. At that moment, his mother's eyes opened clearly, as if aided by spirits. Kun stated that Qi Qiao can attack evil blood; if the eye condition involves blood obstruction, its use will surely be miraculous. However, if used generally to treat all eye diseases, it would not be effective.
[True Person Brightening Eyes Pill]
Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae Praeparata), Chuan Jiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli) (remove the pips and closed fruits, lightly stir-fried. Equal parts).
Grind together into a powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of *Koelreuteria* seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, swallowed with salt-rice water on an empty stomach.
The Fu family in Jiangling suffered from dim vision and excessive tearing. They were poor and made a living selling paper. Their nature loved clouds and waters (nature/hermits), always welcoming visitors who appeared so. One day, a guest wearing a square cap and cloth robe passed by and gave them this prescription to treat their eyes. Following the prescription, within less than a month, their vision became clear, and they could see at night. Kun stated that the Kidney governs the pupils of the eyes. When Kidney Water is deficient and exhausted, it causes dim vision. The fluid of the Liver manifests as tears; when the Liver has wind-heat, it causes tearing. In this prescription, Sheng Di Huang cools the Liver, and Shu Di Huang tonifies the Kidney. Chuan Jiao is pungent and hot, capable of treating Bi Qi (obstruction of qi) in the Liver and Kidney. Bi Qi refers to qi stagnation where damp-heat adheres and does not disperse. Taking it on an empty stomach with salt drink allows it to reach the regions of the Liver and Kidney directly. Although the disease manifests at the branch (symptoms), this treatment addresses the root (organs). Such mastery of pathology explains why it is called the "True Person" prescription!
