If the fetus is alive, there is no need to induce labor; forcing induction is akin to the Song dynasty story of "pulling shoots to help them grow" (Yamiao Zhuzhang), which brings no benefit and only causes harm. Ancient formulas included the use of rabbit brain, pig lard, oil and honey, scallion whites, okra seeds, cow's milk, elm bark, and talc; others used *Ricini Semen* (Jinfengzi, Castor Bean Seed) or oak branches, taking advantage of their slippery and moistening properties, which is still somewhat consistent with medical logic. There were also methods using ash from crossbow triggers, snake skins, pen tips, *Baicaoshuang* (Bai Cao Shuang, soot from the stove bottom), *Fulonggan* (Fu Long Gan, calcined soil from the center of a cooking stove), chisel heads, applying *Ricini Semen* to the sole of the foot, or holding *Shiyan* (Shi Yan, a type of fossil/mineral). Although each method was said to have profound meaning, consuming ashes merely depletes and dries up body fluids (*Jinye*), while external applications on hands or feet often prove ineffective. Alas! Neglecting proper care during pregnancy leads to difficult labor; frequently resorting to various miscellaneous drugs to induce labor is a result of being deluded.
*Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Fu Ling (Poria), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) [equal parts]; Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) [a small amount].
This formula is indicated for cases where Qi and Blood are deficient and depleted after normal delivery. It is also indicated for miscarriage or premature birth (Xiao Chan).
For Qi deficiency, tonifying Qi is appropriate; thus, Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, and Gan Cao are used. For Blood deficiency, nourishing Blood is appropriate; thus, Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Shao Yao, Di Huang, and Rou Gui are used. Zhu Danxi stated: "Postpartum conditions require substantial tonification of Qi and Blood." This refers to that principle.
In postpartum cases where blood stasis remains in the uterus causing pain, Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) combined with the aforementioned herbs is suitable.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Chao Pu Huang (Processed Pollen Typhae), Chao Hei Gan Jiang (Processed Blackened Zingiberis Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus/Cortex Heart), each 2 liang; Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3 qian; Hei Dou (Black Soybean, fried and peeled) 2.5 he.
Grind all the above ingredients into a fine powder. This formula is indicated for...
Fetal death in utero refers to fetal demise after prolonged difficult labor. The diagnostic criterion for using this formula is a blue-black discoloration of the pregnant woman's tongue. Pu Huang can expel stale blood (blood stasis); Shu Di Huang, Shao Yao, and Dang Gui can nourish new blood; Gan Jiang and Rou Gui can guide the circulation of new blood while expelling stale blood; Gan Cao and Hei Dou can harmonize healthy Qi and expel pathogenic Qi. The master said: Therefore, these conditions are treated concurrently.
