Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang) (eight liang), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu) (pitted), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) (four liang each), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Poria (Baifuling) (decocted, three liang each), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie) (three liang each).
Cinnamomi Ramulus (Rougui) (stir-fried), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) (processed, pitted and navel removed, one liang each).
When both the water and fire within the Kidney are deficient, leading to irregular urination, this formula is indicated.
The Kidney possesses both water and fire, governs the two lower orifices (urine and feces), and controls opening and closing. When the water in the Kidney interstice is exhausted, fire acts alone; it can close but not open, causing urinary retention. When the fire in the Kidney interstice is extinguished, water acts alone; it can open but not close, causing urinary incontinence. In this formula, the warming and hot nature of Fuzi and Rougui supplements the fire. The moistening nature of Shu Dihuang and Shanzhuyu strengthens the water. If one wishes to solidify the fire, the sour and salty properties of Mudanpi and Zexie can be used to astringe and drain it. If one wishes to solidify the water, the sweet and bland properties of Fuling and Shanyao can be used to control and percolate it. Once water and fire interact harmoniously, the opening and closing functions are regulated. For detailed examination, refer to the sections on "Deficiency, Consumption, and Phthisis" and "Thirst".
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (three qian each).
For various acute conditions presenting with enuresis and inability to control urination, this formula is indicated.
"Various acute conditions" refers to sudden collapse and other acute diseases. Enuresis and inability to control urination occur because the form and vital energy are about to dissipate; the formless Qi is insufficient to retain the formed urine. Sweet-warm substances belong to Yang and can tonify Qi; therefore, Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, and Gancao, all being sweet-warm, may be used. One might ask: Since Fuling has a bland and percolating nature, should it be omitted during enuresis? I reply: There are two types of Fuling. The dry and unmoistened type should be omitted. However, if it is firm, clean, and moist, there is no objection to using it. It guides Renshen downward, directly tonifying the Bladder. Who would say this is inadvisable? For detailed examination, refer to the section on "Qi".
For adults with seminal emission/turbid urine and children with enuresis, using only Allii Tuberosi Semen (Jiu Zi) made into pills yields miraculous results.
The Classic states: "Excessive pathogenic qi causes enuresis; Bi syndrome gathers in the Kidney." What is meant by "Bi gathering" is that dampness gathers to form Bi syndrome. Jiu Zi is moistening, pungent, and hot. Its pungency and heat can disperse dampness, and its moistening nature allows it to descend. Therefore, Sun Simiao often used it to guide the medicine downward to treat Bi qi!
