Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 2 qian); Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian).
For vomiting triggered by the smell of food due to stomach deficiency resulting from prolonged illness, this formula is indicated.
The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, and the official responsible for storage; thus, a strong Stomach leads to good appetite, while a weak Stomach causes vomiting upon smelling food. The Classics state: "Those who can digest food prosper; those who cannot lose food perish." How can one fail to treat this urgently? Therefore, Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, and Gan Cao have sweet and warm properties that tonify the Stomach. Chen Pi and Ban Xia have pungent and penetrating properties that resolve vomiting.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (stir-fried), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (stir-fried).
For vomiting accompanied by abdominal pain, this formula is indicated.
Vomiting followed by immediate cessation of pain indicates Heat syndrome; vomiting with persistent pain indicates Cold syndrome. Although Cold has a contracting nature, why does it cause vomiting? The Master said: "Excessive Cold repels Yang Qi, thereby causing vomiting." To treat Cold with Heat, warming agents such as Ding Xiang and Gan Jiang are used. Since excessive vomiting damages Qi, tonics such as Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, and Gan Cao are employed.
Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber) (processed), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) (each 2 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 qian).
After proper sweating in Taiyang Cold Damage disease, if residual heat remains in the Yangming and Shaoyang channels, inevitably causing vomiting, this formula is indicated.
Yangming corresponds to the Stomach, and Shaoyang corresponds to the Gallbladder. There is a distinction: thirst indicates Heat in the Stomach, while bitter taste indicates Heat in the Gallbladder. If both are present, residual heat exists in both channels. In this formula, Ge Gen clears Stomach Heat, Zhu Ru clears Gallbladder Heat, Ban Xia descends rebellious Qi, and Gan Cao harmonizes Yang Qi.
Xiong Huang (Realgar), Ming Fan (Alumen), Gua Lou Di (Momordicae Fructus) (stir-fried, each 5 fen).
Grind into powder and take with wine.
For vomiting with salivation and a normal pulse, indicating a parasitic condition, this formula is used to induce vomiting.
Parasite movement causes salivation, and stomach itching causes vomiting. A normal pulse refers to the pulse of a healthy person, neither slow nor rapid, without signs of Cold or Heat. Xiong Huang is potent, and Ming Fan is bitter and astringent; both are vermifuges. Assisted by Gua Lou Di's ability to induce emesis, the parasites will be expelled immediately. It is also stated: For excess conditions where the patient can tolerate emesis, this formula is primary; for deficient conditions where emesis is not tolerated, Wumei Wan (Mume Pill) from the Cold Damage section is appropriate.
