Tang Gaozong suffered severely from wind-dizziness and a heavy head, to the point that he could not see. The illness was critical, so he summoned Qin Minghe and Zhang Wenzhong for diagnosis. Minghe said, "Wind-toxin is attacking upwards. If we prick the head to release a small amount of blood, it will be cured." Empress Wu (Zetian) angrily shouted from behind the curtain: "This man should be executed! Is the Emperor's head a place to test bloodletting?" The Emperor said, "Physicians discuss pathology; according to principle, no crime should be attached. Moreover, my head feels heavy and stifling, almost unbearable. Bloodletting may well be beneficial." He ordered the needling. Minghe pricked Baihui (GV20) and Naohu (DU16), causing bleeding. The Emperor said, "My vision has cleared." Before he finished speaking, the Empress came out from behind the curtain, bowed in worship, and thanked them, saying, "This is a master sent by Heaven to us." She personally carried silk treasures and presented them to Minghe. Kun stated that various pains are excess patterns, and thus should be treated with draining methods. The *Neijing* (*Huangdi Neijing*) mentions bloodletting repeatedly, specifying that one must stop when the blood changes color. Nowadays, people in the South detest acupuncture and stone therapy, often fearing bloodletting, while those in the North still practice it. The classics state: "Those who detest needles and stones are not worthy of being taught profound techniques." Therefore, a skilled physician must master both acupuncture and stone therapy. Alas! Zhu Danxi was virtuous but did not know acupuncture or stone therapy. Yet today, the masses universally acclaim him as the great synthesizer of medicine. This is akin to Ziqin praising Zigong (implying an excessive or misplaced evaluation). If Zhu were alive in the underworld...
Preface states: The abdomen is the residence of Middle Qi (the vital energy of the Spleen and Stomach). Once disease and pain occur, they disrupt the Middle Qi, leaving the bones and twelve organs unable to receive Qi for nourishment. Therefore, I have examined eleven famous formulas to treat abdominal pain.
Pao Ganjiang (Processed Rhizoma Zingiberis) Liangjiang (Equal parts)
For abdominal pain accompanied by a slow pulse, this formula is indicated.
There are several causes of abdominal pain. Given the slow pulse, we know it is due to Cold. Therefore, we use Ganjiang and Liangjiang, which are acrid and hot, to treat it. Acridity can break up stagnation, and heat dispels cold.
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus) Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma) Chao Gancao (Prepared Radix Glycyrrhizae)
This is also a formula for treating abdominal pain caused by Cold-Qi.
When Cold-Qi enters the meridians, it causes sluggishness and delayed circulation, resulting in abdominal pain. The classics state: "Pain ceases immediately upon receiving warmth." 'Jiong' means heat. Therefore, we use Dingxiang, Huixiang, and Liangjiang, which are acrid and hot, to treat it. Furthermore, Gancao is added to harmonize the Middle Qi amidst the damage caused by pain.
