Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang).
Eclampsia of pregnancy (Zixian, a condition characterized by convulsions and coma during pregnancy) is the primary indication for this formula.
The term "Zixian" refers to convulsions and falling into unconsciousness occurring during pregnancy. This arises because blood nourishes the fetus, leading to Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire, and rebellious phlegm-qi causing jue-ni (reversal cold or chaotic qi flow), thus resulting in convulsions and fainting. In this formula, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction, a fundamental formula for tonifying blood and regulating menstruation composed of Danggui, Chuanxiong, Shaoyao, and Shudihuang) can...
Perillae Folium (Zisuye), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, with the white pith removed), Arecae Pericarpium (Dafupi, washed with black soybean juice), Angelicae Sinensis Radix Rubra (Dangguiwei), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Fengcao), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, stir-fried with wine).
Subsiding Fetus of Pregnancy (Zixuan, a condition characterized by chest and abdominal distension with fetal qi rushing upward) is the primary indication for this formula.
When fetal qi is disharmonious and rushes upward to the heart and abdomen, causing abdominal fullness, obstruction, and stifling sensation, it is called Zixuan. This is due to excess qi in the lower jiao, where the great qi pushes the fetus upward. Therefore, Perilla Leaf, Areca Peel, Tangerine Peel, and Chuanxiong are used to circulate qi; Angelica Root Red and Peony Root are used to benefit blood. When qi flows and blood moves freely, the fetal qi naturally descends. However, the reason Ginseng and Licorice must be used is that where pathogenic factors gather, qi is necessarily deficient. Qi-circulating drugs push out the old, while Qi-tonifying drugs bring in the new!
Kochiae Fructus (Dicui Cao) 4 liang, water 4 sheng, decocted to obtain 2 sheng, divided into three doses. Taking the natural juice is also acceptable.
Dysuria of Pregnancy (Zilin, a condition characterized by frequent and painful urination during pregnancy) is the primary indication for this formula.
Urination that is dribbling and difficult during pregnancy is called Zilin. The origin of Zilin lies in damp-heat. Kochiae Fructus can promote bladder diuresis and disperse wind-heat; using it to treat...
Abelmoschi Semen (Dongkuizi, slightly stir-fried), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Morus Alba Cortex (Sangbaipi), Polyporus (Chifuling), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (all in equal parts).
This is also a formula for treating Zilin.
Slippery properties can remove stagnation, hence Abelmoschi Semen is used. When clear qi ascends, turbid qi naturally descends, hence Bupleuri Radix is used. When qi transformation occurs, urine can be excreted, hence Mulberry Bark is used. Acrid and unblocking properties can moisten orifices, hence Angelica Sinensis Radix is used. As for Polyporus and Red Peony Root, they are chosen for their ability to enter the blood level and facilitate the transformation of Bing-Ding (referring to the fire element and associated organ functions like the Heart and Small Intestine/Bladder).
Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Perillae Folium (Zisuye), Elsholtziae Herba (Xiangru), Morus Alba Cortex (Sangbaipi) (each 1 qian), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike), Areca Seed (Binglang), Scutellariae Radix (Tiaohuangqin) (each 5 fen), Terminalia Chebula Retusa (Hezizi Pi), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) (each 3 fen).
For edema of the body, swelling and tightness of the four limbs, and difficulty in urination during pregnancy, this formula is indicated.
During pregnancy, qi and blood gather at the fetus, causing the circulation of Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi) to become sluggish, thus leading to bodily edema, limb swelling and tightness, and dysuria. In this formula, Perilla Leaf circulates qi in the exterior; Mulberry Bark, Aurantium Fruit, Akebia Stem, Aucklandia Root, and Areca Seed circulate qi in the interior; Elsholtzia Herb circulates dampness within the qi. Scutellaria Root circulates heat within the qi; Terminalia Chebula Retusa retains fluids within the qi. After taking the medicine, Ying and Wei flow smoothly, and qi and blood operate vigorously, so edema and other ailments can all be cured. Someone asked: Why not directly promote diuresis? I replied: The *Neijing* states, "When qi transforms, excretion occurs." Thus, physicians who understand the root only regulate qi and do not need to use bland-draining diuretics.
