One ingredient: Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), stir-fried until brown, ground into powder and made into pills.
For dry and constipated stools accompanied by thirst during sleep, this formula is indicated.
The Kidney governs the five fluids. Once Kidney Water is deficient, all five fluids become depleted; thus, thirst appears above and dryness/constipation below. Huangbai is bitter and dense in flavor, moist and lubricating in texture, belonging to Yin within Yin; therefore, it can nourish Shaoyin and tonify Kidney Water. This corresponds to the *Neijing* principle of "moisten what is dry," also referred to as nourishing the source of transformation. Other formulas such as Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) and Huqian Wan (Tiger-Kneading Pill), which benefit the Kidney, may also be selected. These two formulas are found in the section on Deficiency Damage.
Xuanmingfen (Natrii Sulfas, 3 qian)
Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian)
Decoct in water and take mixed with the solution.
This formula is indicated for constipation caused by Blood Heat.
Xuanmingfen is salty and cold, used for its ability to soften hardness; Dangguiwei is acrid and promoting circulation, used for its ability to invigorate blood and break stasis. This is a purgative formula; dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's deficiency or excess condition.
When dryness affects the large intestine (Guochang), and one desires rapid evacuation but Qi deficiency prevents transportation and expulsion, the Mi Jian Dao Fa (Honey Suppository Method) or Zhu Dan Dao Fa (Pig Gallbladder Suppository Method) should be used. Both methods are described in the section on Cold Damage.
Narration: Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder) presents with two patterns: Yin and Yang, which everyone knows. However, before Huoluan fully manifests, or immediately after it subsides, if physicians fail to examine carefully and administer contrary treatments, or if patients do not understand and consume greasy foods, death may result. Here, eight ancient formulas are examined for treating Huoluan; generally, they favor unblocking and oppose obstruction.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each 2 liang)
Grind all into powder, form pills with honey the size of a chicken egg. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in boiling water.
This formula is indicated when Cold invades Taiyin, presenting with abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, Huoluan, predominance of cold symptoms, and lack of desire to drink.
Cold invading the Taiyin Spleen involves not only external Cold directly striking Taiyin, but also internal accumulation from consuming cold drinks and food, causing Cold Qi to block the Middle Jiao. When Yang Qi of the Middle and Lower Jiao cannot disperse and ascend, disharmony occurs, leading to abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and Huoluan. Huoluan differs from simple vomiting and diarrhea; it arises after prolonged vomiting and diarrhea deplete body fluids, resulting in violent convulsions of limbs and dizziness/confusion of vision. For Cold conditions, warmth is applied; hence, Ganjiang’s acrid-hot nature is used. Where pathogenic factors gather, Qi is necessarily deficient; therefore, Renshen, Baizhu, and Gancao are used for their warming and tonifying properties.
