Dahuang (Cassiae Semen, Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma) [10 liang, steamed], Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria Root) [2 liang], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Licorice Root) [3 liang], Ganqi (Dry Laccares, Dry Resin of Chinese Lac Insect) [stir-fried], Taoren (Persicae Semen, Peach Seed) [each 1 liang], Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, Peony Root) [4 liang]
Xingren (Apricot Kernel, remove skin and tips), Mengchong (Blatta Orientalis, Oriental Cockroach) [remove wings and feet, stir-fried], Qicao (Melandryi Semen, Melandryum Seed) [stir-fried, each 1 sheng], E chong (Eupolyphaga Steleophaga, Ground Beetle) [0.5 sheng, stir-fried], Shuizhi (Hirudo, Leech) [100 pieces, roasted until yellow], Ganhuangdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, Prepared Rehmannia Root) [0.5 liang]
Grind all ingredients into powder, form pills with honey the size of small beans. Take three times a day, five pills each time.
Abdominal distension with palpable masses, pain upon pressure that does not shift location, no aversion to food in the mouth, free urination, yellow stool, sallow complexion with rough, scaly skin: this is a definitive blood stasis syndrome (Blood Stasis Syndrome). This pill is indicated for this condition.
Abdominal distension with palpable masses where pain shifts upon pressure indicates Qi stagnation and Fire pathogen; since the pain here does not shift, it belongs to tangible pathogens. However, both food retention and blood stasis are tangible. If abdominal distension were due to food retention, there would be an aversion to food; since there is no aversion to food, we know it is blood stasis. Free urination indicates the disease is in the Blood level while the Qi level is unaffected. Black stool indicates the disease belongs to the Yin category. Sallow complexion with rough, scaly skin occurs because blood pathology fails to nourish the face and moisten the skin, resulting in sallow color and dry, scaling skin. Dahuang (Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma) is a purgative agent; guided by Ganqi (Dry Laccares), Mengchong (Oriental Cockroach), Qicao (Melandryum Seed), Shuizhi (Leech), E chong (Ground Beetle), and Taoren (Peach Seed), it enters the Blood level to attack blood stasis. Shaoyao (Peony Root) and Ganhuangdi (Prepared Rehmannia Root) generate new blood during the process of removing stasis. Xingren (Apricot Kernel) and Gancao (Licorice Root) promote the generation of new Qi after expelling败血 (decayed blood). The bitterness of Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) thickens the intestines and strengthens the stomach, preventing injury from the purgative action.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma, moistened with wine), Taoren (Peach Seed, remove skin and tips), Jishi (Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum, Chicken Gizzard Lining) [white variety, stir-fried with wine, equal proportion]
Grind all ingredients into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, administered with Ginger Decoction (Jiang Tang).
This formula is effective for treating Xue Gu (Blood Gu, a type of abdominal mass caused by blood stasis and parasites).
Dahuang (Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma) is bitter and cold, facilitating purgation. Assisted by Taoren (Peach Seed) to expel decaying blood. Assisted by Jishi (Chicken Gizzard Lining) to kill Gu worms (parasites).
The *Fuzhong Lun* states: "There is a disease characterized by fullness in the heart and abdomen, where one cannot eat dinner if they ate breakfast. What is this disease?" Qibo replied: "It is named Guzhang (Drum Distension)." The Yellow Emperor asked: "How should it be treated?" Qibo said: "Treat it with Jishi Li (Chicken Dropping Wine Decoction); one dose brings improvement, two doses bring cure." Wang Bing annotated: "Chicken droppings promote diuresis and are slightly cold." This annotation is not entirely appropriate.
