Leech (Shuizhi, Hirudo) (30 pieces, stir-fried until brown)
Dragonfly larva (Mengchong, Ophiogomphus cecilia) (30 pieces, wings and legs removed, stir-fried)
Peach kernel (Taoren, Semen Persicae) (20 pieces, skin and尖 [tips] removed)
Rhubarb root (Dahuang, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (3 liang, soaked in wine)
For jaundice caused by blood stasis accumulation, this formula is the primary treatment.
When yang pathogenic factors and stagnant heat accumulate internally, presenting with hardness and fullness in the lower abdomen, patent urination, yet accompanied by jaundice, it is termed "jaundice due to blood stasis" (Xuxue Huangdan). Bitter substances enter the blood level, and salty substances soften hardness; therefore, Leech and Dragonfly larva are used to expel ruined blood. Slippery substances lubricate the intestines, and cold substances descend to clear heat; therefore, Peach kernel and Rhubarb root are used to purge blood-heat. Alternatively, Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction to Order the Qi) from the Treatise on Cold Damage may also be considered for use.
Tangerine peel (Chenpi, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (white pith removed)
Magnolia bark (Houpo, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) (stir-fried with ginger juice)
Burreed tuber (Sanleng, Rhizoma Sparganii) (stir-fried with vinegar)
Atractylodes rhizome (Cangzhu, Rhizoma Atractylodis) (soaked in rice water for seven days)
Curcuma zedoaria rhizome (Ezhu, Rhizoma Curcumae Zedoariae) (stir-fried with vinegar)
Green tangerine peel (Qingpi, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) (each of the above five liang)
Licorice root (Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) (1 liang, honey-roasted)
Cyperus rhizome (Xiangfu, Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) (1 jin, stir-fried with vinegar)
Needle sand (Zhensha, Magnetitum prepared) (2 liang, stir-fried with vinegar until red, repeated seven times)
Avoid consuming dog meat, fruits, and vegetables.
This is a formula for regulating Gu Dan (Grain Jaundice) and Jiu Dan (Alcohol Jaundice).
The name "Wen Zhong" (Warm the Middle) signifies the primary function of treating dampness stagnating in the middle jiao. Water, grain, and alcohol all transform into dampness; if transportation and transformation are proper, health is maintained. However, if they accumulate in the middle palace (spleen/stomach), they obstruct the "shao huo" (mineral fire/physiological fire), generating heat that leads to jaundice. Therefore, Atractylodes rhizome, Cyperus rhizome, Tangerine peel, Green tangerine peel, and Magnolia bark are used to flatten the excessive qi in the stomach and promote its flow; once qi flows freely, water and grain do not stagnate. Burreed tuber and Curcuma zedoaria rhizome are used to reduce hardness; reducing hardness gradually eliminates stagnation. Needle sand is used primarily to borrow its metal attribute (Dui trigram) to...
Vitamin B-rich green alum (Lüfan, Vitriolum Ferrum Oxidatum et Sulfuricum) (half jin, fired until red hot)
Jujube flesh (Zaorou, Fructus Jujubae pulp) (2 jin, boiled, skin removed, pounded into paste for pill coating)
Ping Wei San (Flat Stomach Powder) (4 liang, used as pill coating)
Take 30 pills per dose, washed down with ginger decoction.
For Gu Dan presenting with yellowing of both body and eyes, this formula is also effective.
Stagnation of water and grain in the middle jiao suppresses the fire of the liver and kidneys; over time, depression generates heat, causing the body and eyes to turn yellow. In this formula, Lüfan is salty and cold, capable of softening phlegm-stagnation and overcoming damp-heat. Jujube flesh is sweet and warm, capable of benefiting the spleen and stomach and nourishing the middle palace. Ping Wei San consists of Atractylodes rhizome, Magnolia bark, Tangerine peel, and Licorice root. Atractylodes rhizome and Magnolia bark are used to flatten the excessive qi of the stomach and eliminate accumulated fluids. Tangerine peel and Licorice root, one promoting qi flow and the other harmonizing the middle, embody the intention of regulating the stomach.
