For cases where the smallpox eruption lacks luster, fails to swell and rise, has roots that are not red, and presents with exterior deficiency and interior excess, this formula is indicated.
When the middle qi is sufficient and qi and blood are abundant, the smallpox will be lustrous and rise properly, with red and vibrant roots, avoiding complications such as itching and collapse. If middle qi is deficient, the exterior also becomes weak, and various symptoms arise. In this formula, *Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma*, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*, *Poria*, and *Angelicae Sinensis Radix* are used to tonify the stomach; *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*, *Cinnamomi Cortex*, *Caryophylli Flos*, and *Cardamomi Fructus Albus* are used to warm the stomach; *Pinelliae Tuber*, *Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum*, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*, and *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex* are used to regulate the stomach. The Stomach channel belongs to Yangming. Chen stated: "The Yangming channel governs the muscles. When stomach qi is sufficient, the muscles become warm, naturally achieving luster and swelling, without the risk of itching and collapse." This is indeed a profound insight.

For cases of interior deficiency leading to diarrhea accompanied by thirst, this formula is indicated.
Stomach deficiency with cold generates diarrhea. Diarrhea depletes body fluids, causing thirst. In this formula, *Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma* and *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* are used to tonify the stomach; *Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum*, *Caryophylli Flos*, and *Cinnamomi Cortex* are used to warm the stomach; *Arecae Pericarpium*, *Aurantii Fructus Immaturus*, *Pinelliae Tuber*, *Peucedani Radix*, and *Poria cum Rubro* are used to regulate the stomach. As for *Terminalia Chebulae Fructus*, it is used to stop diarrhea and generate body fluids. This approach also focuses on stomach qi. Generally, if the stomach is not deficient and cold, diarrhea will cease naturally, body fluids will regenerate, and thirst will be eliminated. Chen Wenzhong said: "Abdominal distension with thirst, diarrhea with thirst, cold toes with thirst, palpitations with fright and thirst, warm body with thirst, fever with pale face and thirst, severe chills with unceasing thirst, rapid breathing with teeth grinding and thirst, drinking water leading to incessant watery diarrhea—these nine conditions are not heat syndromes, but rather result from insufficient body fluids and deficiency of spleen, stomach, and muscles." One should treat them with *Muxiang San*. If there is no improvement, add *Caryophylli Flos* and *Cinnamomi Cortex*. I hold that if the smallpox color is pale, hands and feet are cold, urination is free, and thirst occurs under these circumstances, it is a deficiency syndrome, and this original formula is indicated. However, if the smallpox color is red, stool is dry, and urine is dark, and thirst occurs under these circumstances, it is a heat syndrome, which is not suitable for this formula; one must exercise caution and not administer it.
