According to the *Records of the Grand Historian* (*Shiji*), the favored concubine of the King of Chuan was pregnant but did not lactate. Chunyu Yi was summoned to examine her. He gave her a pinch of *Lángdàng* (Datura seed) medicine, administered with wine, and she lactated immediately.
"Lactation" here refers to childbirth. Pregnancy without parturition is due to coagulation and stagnation of Qi and Blood; it is a condition where delivery should occur but does not. *Lángdàng* can move obstructed Qi, and wine has the property of moving stagnant Blood; therefore, this treatment leads to immediate parturition. Upon re-examining her pulse, it was found to be dry and forceful. A dry and forceful pulse indicates excess conditions. Excess diseases are suitable for purgative treatment; thus, *Xiaoshí* (Niter/Sodium Nitrate) was used to descend accumulated blood.
*Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), *Congbai* (Allii Cepae Bulbus, 10 stalks).
For postpartum agalactia (lack of milk), this formula is indicated.
Milk is formed from Qi and Blood. Therefore, women with abundant Qi and Blood invariably have milk. Those presenting with agalactia are generally women with weak constitution. This formula uses *Danggui* and *Huangqi* to greatly tonify Qi and Blood, thereby nourishing the source of milk. *Congbai* is pungent and warm, acting directly on the Yangming channel, which connects to the breasts; thus...
*Dangguiwei* (Tail of Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Chishao* (Paeoniae Rubra Radix), *Jiu Honghua* (Safflower processed with wine), *Jiu Niuxi* (Cyathulae Radix processed with wine) (each 5 qian).
For weaning (cessation of lactation), this formula is indicated.
In women, blood flows downward as menstruation and upward as milk. To achieve weaning, one regulates menstruation so that milk flows downward, avoiding the discomfort of breast distension. In this formula, *Dangguiwei*, *Chishao*, *Honghua*, and *Niuxi* are all herbs that guide blood downward; hence they are used. It is named "Mianhuai" (Avoiding Pregnancy/Weaning) because...
Preface: Lineage continuation is essential for extending the family line; lacking heirs is unfilial. Thus, gentlemen value this highly. Therefore, emulating ancestral sacrifices and praying at Niqiu Mountain, the ancients were eager for offspring. However, some who pray or take medicine remain childless throughout their lives. Why is this? Alas! Just as there are barren places in heaven and earth, there are also childless people. The *Lingshu* reveals these subtleties. Here, five formulas are examined to describe methods for obtaining offspring.
*Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, de-rooted), *Tianmendong* (Asparagi Radix, de-core), *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine), *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma, de-hairy), *Shanzhuyu* (Corni Fructus, de-seeded), *Shichangpu* (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, stir-fried), *Chishizhi* (Halloysit Rubrum), *Wuweizi* (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, de-stemmed), *Fupenzi* (Rubiae Fructus, de-caliced), *Baifuling* (Poria), *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen), *Guomuxiang* (Costi Rhizoma), *Baiziren* (Biota Seed) (each 1 liang), *Shanyao* (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried with ginger juice), *Chuan Bajitian* (Morindae Officinalis Radix, de-core), *Chuanjiao* (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, removing eyes, stems, and closed ones, stir-fried until oil appears), *Chuan Niuxi* (Cyathulae Radix, de-rooted, washed with wine), *Sheng Dihuang* (Rehmanniae Radix), *Shu Dihuang* (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), *Digupi* (Lycii Cortex, de-wood and soil), *Duzhong* (Eucommiae Cortex) (each 2 liang), *Yuanzhi* (Polygalae Radix, de-rooted, soaked in licorice decoction, de-core), *Roucongrong* (Cistanches Herba, washed with wine, de-membrane, sun-dried), *Gouqizi* (Lycii Fructus) (each 3 liang), *Tusizi* (Cuscutae Semen, washed with wine, cleaned, steamed with wine, pounded into cakes, sun-dried, 4 liang).
The above twenty-five herbs are processed with refined honey to make pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, three times daily.
This formula is indicated for male and female infertility.
The essence of Yin and Yang combines miraculously to form the body and nurture life. Therefore, those seeking offspring should solidify their essence. People today often supplement essence by focusing solely on tonifying the Kidney; this seeks the branch rather than the root. The Classics state: The Kidney governs water and receives the essence of the Zang and Fu organs to store it. Thus, only when the Five Zang are abundant can essence be excreted. From this, it follows that the Kidney primarily stores essence, but the origin of generating essence lies fundamentally in the Five Zang and Six Fu organs. In this formula, *Renshen*, *Tianmendong*, and *Wuweizi* are used to tonify the Lung; *Shichangpu*, *Baiziren*, *Danggui*, and *Yuanzhi* are used to nourish the Heart; *Baifuling* and *Huai Shanyao* are used to nourish the Spleen. *Shanzhuyu*, *Shu Dihuang*, *Fupenzi*, *Duzhong*, *Niuxi*, *Bajitian*, *Roucongrong*, *Gouqizi*, and *Tusizi* are used to tonify the Liver and Kidney, because the Liver and Kidney share the same treatment principle. Meanwhile, *Cheqianzi* and *Zexie* drain pathogenic factors that scorch Yin; *Sheng Dihuang* and *Digupi* clear fire from the Five Zang; *Chishizhi* astringes to consolidate essence; *Guomuxiang* moves to unblock the Six Fu organs; *Chuanjiao* disperses dampness and bi-syndrome. This formula harmonizes both the Five Zang and Six Fu organs. When the essence of the Five Zang is sufficient and the Qi of the Six Fu organs is harmonious, then conception can occur and children can be born. Only those who understand the principles of the *Neijing* can recognize this.
