Preface states: Those who govern a state must eliminate the petty officials who corrupt the state. Similarly, those who practice medicine must eliminate the parasites that corrode the body. Although the body and the state are different, the underlying principles are consistent.
*Artemisiae argyi Fructus* (Harvested fruit of Mugwort, here referring to *Krakowskia cichoriifolia* or similar parasitic seeds, commonly known as Heshi) [Note: Traditional text says 鹤虱, usually *Carpobutris* or *Artemisia*, WHO term: Herba Siegesbeckiae or Semen Karwinskiae depending on species, but sticking to literal "Heshi" with explanation if needed, however standard is often *Semen Karwinskiae* or *Fructus Cichorii*. Let's use generic description or Pinyin if specific ID varies, but WHO prefers *Semen Karwinskiae* for 鹤虱 in many contexts or *Herba Siegesbeckiae*. Given the context of ancient texts, it's often *Siegesbeckia orientalis*. I will use *Herba Siegesbeckiae* (Heshi, 鹤虱) as a representative common translation, or simply *Heshi* if uncertain, but WHO has *Semen Karwinskiae*. Let's stick to the most common modern TCM herb mapping for 鹤虱 which is often *Siegesbeckiae Herba* or *Karwinskiae Semen*. I will use *Semen Karwinskiae* (Heshi, 鹤虱) as it is the pharmacopoeia standard for the seed form often used.] (Remove soil) *Malachiti Lapis* (Huafen, 胡粉) [Note: Malachite, toxic, rarely used now] (Stir-fried) *Radix Meliae Toosendan* (Kulian Gen, 苦楝根) (East-growing roots not emerging from soil) *Arecae Semen* (Binglang, 槟榔) (1 liang each) *Chenopodii Semen* (Wuyi, 芜荑) *Quisqualis Fructus* (Shijunzi, 使君子) (5 fen each).
Dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's size; infants aged one year may take 5 fen.
This formula is the primary treatment for disorders caused by various intestinal parasites.
The Classics state: The intestines and stomach are like a market, encompassing and accommodating everything. The generation of parasites within them is akin to rotten grass transforming into fireflies, arising from damp-heat. In this formula, Heshi, Binglang, Kulian Gen, Huafen, Bai Fan (Alumen), Wuyi, and Shijunzi are all substances that kill parasites. Ancient formulas typically used these agents singly, whereas modern practices combine them into pills.
*Hydrargyrum* (Shuiyin, 水银) (1 jin) *Sulfur* (Liuhuang, 硫黄) (4 liang).
Stir-fry these two substances in a new iron pot until they turn into sand-like grains, then place them in a water-fire tripod (a type of alchemical furnace) to refine into powder. Form pills using rice paste, sized like hemp seeds. Take 3 pills per dose, gradually increasing to 5–7 pills. Avoid consuming pig and sheep blood, mung bean powder, and cold, slippery foods.
This formula is highly effective for various intestinal parasites.
I have previously stated that damp-heat generates parasites; thus, damp-heat is the heaven (environment) of parasites. This formula uses Liuhuang to dry dampness and Shuiyin to drive out heat, thereby depriving the parasites of their environment. Once deprived of their environment, parasites cannot survive.
Commentary by Wu Kun: Ancient formulas for killing parasites commonly used drugs such as *Omphalia lapidescens* (Leiwuan, 雷丸), *Cyathulae Radix* (Guanzhong, 贯众), *Lac Periplocae* (Ganqi, 干漆), *Cera flava* (Lachen, 蜡尘 - yellow beeswax dust/residue), *Stemonae Radix* (Baibu, 百部), and *Plumbum Cinis* (Qianhui, 铅灰). Some formulas add *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata* (Fuzi, 附子) and *Zingiberis Rhizoma* (Ganjiang, 干姜) to strengthen righteous Qi. Some add *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix* (Kushen, 苦参) and *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian, 黄连) because parasites are pacified by bitter flavors. Some add *Mume Fructus* (Wumei, 乌梅) and *Terminalia Chebula Retusa* (Hezi, 诃子) because parasites are softened by sour flavors. Some add *Veratri Radix* (Lilu, 藜芦) and *Crepis Seed* (Gua Di, 瓜蒂) to induce vomiting of the parasites. Some add *Genkwa Flos* (Yuanhua, 芫花) and *Strychni Semen* (Heiqiu, 黑丑) to promote the downward expulsion of parasites via defecation. *Realgar* (Xionghuang, 雄黄), *Zanthoxyli Fructus* (Chuanjiao, 川椒), *Cnidii Fructus* (Shechuang, 蛇床), *Camphora* (Zhangnao, 樟脑), *Hydrargyrum* (Shuiyin, 水银), and *Arecae Semen* (Binglang, 槟榔) are used to treat parasites causing scabies. *Liquidambaris Resina* (Hutong Lei, 胡桐泪), *Daturae Semen* (Langdang Zi, 莨菪子), *Allii Tuberosi Semen* (Jiu Zi, 韭子), and *Bufo Venenum* (Chansu, 蟾酥) are used to treat parasites causing dental caries. *Hibisci Mutabilis Cortex* (Chuanjin Pi, 川槿皮) and *Pterocarpri Santalinus Cortex* (Haitong Pi, 海桐皮) are used to treat wind-xuan (tinea) parasites. *Phalaridis Semen* (Qingxiang Zi, 青葙子) and *Rubus Chingii Folium* (Fupen Ye, 覆盆叶) are used to treat parasites causing erosion of the nine orifices. *Cor Cordis Equi Putridum* (Baigu Xin, 败鼓心), *Tabula Talismani Persicae* (Taofu Ban, 桃符板), *Faeces Tigris Os* (Hu Fen Gu, 虎粪骨), *Cervillus Pilus Mortuus* (Siren Zhen, 死人枕), *Clavis Lutrae* (Tazhao, 獭爪), and *Os Gruis* (He Gu, 鹤骨) are used to expel tuberculosis worms (consumption parasites). Alternatively, branches of peach and willow trees growing towards the southeast are used because they possess the vital energy of spring growth and summer expansion, serving as assistance to the human body. Alternatively, east-growing roots of *Evodiae Fructus* (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) or east-growing roots of *Punica Granatum* (Suan Shiliu, 酸石榴) are decocted in water to swallow medicines. This is done because these materials can also kill parasites, and because the East is the beginning of life generation and where parasites receive their qi. East-growing roots can guide the medicinal properties eastward, depriving the parasites of their generative qi, acting as an axe to cut off their root.
