This formula is indicated for spontaneous sweating caused by damp-heat, accompanied by generalized body pain and a soggy pulse.
Dampness alone does not cause sweating; when dampness is steamed by heat, it leads to spontaneous sweating. When dampness flows through the hundred joints, it causes generalized body pain. Dampness is a yin pathogen, hence the pulse presents as soggy. Wind herbs can overcome dampness, so Qianghuo is used. Pungent flavors can dry dampness, so Banxia is used. Bland flavors can leach out dampness, so Zhuling is used. Dampness damages qi; Huangqi, Gancao, and Maimendong are used to tonify qi. Dampness damages blood; Sumu, Honghua, and Danggui Shao are used to resolve stasis. Wuweizi and Mahuang Gen astringe sweat and consolidate exterior deficiency. Sheng Dihuang and Huangqin cool yin-blood and clear damp-heat.
Decoct Ai Ye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi) in water, mix with one qian of Fuling (Poria) powder, and take orally.
When there is no sweating elsewhere on the body, but only a patch of sweating over the heart region, this formula is indicated.
This condition arises from hyperactive Heart fire and retained fluid-phlegm in the diaphragm. The heat-fire steams the retained damp-fluid, causing sweating in this specific area. Fuling is sweet and bland; sweetness nourishes the Heart, while blandness leaches out dampness. Ai Ye is aromatic and astringent; aroma promotes the movement of qi, while astringency secures body fluids.
Preface: Sweat pores are referred to as "Ghost Gates." Therefore, persistent night sweating eventually leads to the loss of the soul (Hun). By examining five famous formulas, the methods for treating night sweating can be largely understood. One should weigh and apply the appropriate method during clinical practice.

Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens), Shu Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) in equal parts; Huangqi (Radix Astragali) doubled in dosage.
This formula is indicated for night sweating caused by yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity.
Sweating while awake is called spontaneous sweating; sweating during sleep is called night sweating. Spontaneous sweating indicates yang deficiency, while night sweating indicates yin deficiency. The term "with fire" refers to symptoms such as facial flushing, dry mouth, dry lips, dark urine, heavy voice, and a rapid pulse. However, the reason yin deficiency leads to night sweating is that when a person with yin deficiency falls asleep, the defensive yang qi, taking advantage of the deficiency, sinks into the yin level. Consequently, the fluids at the exterior lose their protective control, resulting in sweating. Upon waking, yang qi resumes its function, and the defensive qi returns to the exterior; the exterior becomes solid, and sweating stops. Danggui and Shu Dihuang are substances that nourish yin. Huangqin and Huanglian are substances that eliminate fire. Sheng Dihuang and Huangbai can both nourish yin and eliminate fire. Huangqi is used to tonify exterior qi after night sweating. This type of night sweating differs from that seen in Shanghan (Cold Damage) diseases. Night sweating in Shanghan is due to incomplete resolution of pathogens in the half-exterior half-interior level, whereas night sweating in miscellaneous diseases is solely due to yin deficiency. The former focuses on harmonizing the exterior, while this formula focuses on tonifying yin. Those who are knowledgeable should distinguish between them.
