Treatment for all types of phlegm-fluid retention.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Add two zhong of water and three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct until eight-tenths remain, take after meals.
○In this formula, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) expels phlegm and dries dampness; Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) eliminates phlegm and promotes qi circulation; Fuling (Poria) leaches out dampness; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) tonifies the spleen. Generally speaking, tonifying the spleen prevents the generation of dampness; drying dampness prevents the generation of phlegm; promoting qi circulation causes phlegm to dissipate. This can be considered a medicine that balances substance and function, addressing both root and branch.
For cold-phlegm, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); for damp-phlegm, add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); for heat-phlegm, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus); for food-stagnation phlegm, add Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) and Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus); for wind-phlegm, add Nanting (Arisaematis Rhizoma) and Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Spina); for dry-phlegm, add Lou Shi (Fructus Trichosanthis) and Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis); for stagnant-phlegm, add Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus); for old-phlegm, add Haishi (Pumex) and Poxiao (Natrii Sulfas).
