Shi Re (Damp-Heat), Qi Yu (Qi Stagnation), Shen Xu (Kidney Deficiency), Qi Xu (Qi Deficiency)
The so-called Lin Syndrome (Strangury) refers to dribbling and painful urination. It is generally caused by sexual exhaustion, anger, alcohol consumption, and rich flavors brewing damp-heat that accumulates in the Baozhong (Bladder), causing Qi stagnation and failure to transform and discharge, thus giving rise to five types of Lin: Qi Lin, Shi Lin, Gao Lin, Xue Lin, and Lao Lin. The method should be to clear and resolve damp-heat, soothe and regulate stagnant Qi, and separate fluids to benefit the water passages; this is the general principle of treatment. However, if Kidney Qi is weak, it should also be tonified to allow Heart and Kidney to interact, Water and Fire to balance, so that various Lin syndromes and Long Bi (Urinary Retention) will naturally heal. One must examine carefully during clinical practice.
Dai Yun said: Lin syndrome involves dribbling urination, wanting to pass but unable, unable yet wanting again, with pain upon onset, all belonging to Heat.
First, Qi Lin disease presents with astringent urination and constant residual dripping.
Second, Shi Lin involves pain in the urethra, inability to urinate, and passage of sand or stones.
Third, Gao Lin presents with urine flowing like fat or grease.
Fourth, Lao Lin occurs after exertion, with pain radiating to the Qichong point.
Fifth, Xue Lin occurs upon exposure to heat, with dribbling painful urination and hematuria.
Initially, it is Re Lin (Heat Strangury) or Xue Lin; over time, it boils down body fluids, becoming turbid like grease, sand, or stone.
