The prescription for treating Yin Fire is found in the "Deficiency" section.
Generally, the causes include: Phlegm, Wind-Heat, Damp-Heat, and Blood Deficiency.
Tongfeng (Wind-Pain/Gout) refers to wandering pain throughout all joints; ancient texts call this Lijie Feng (Joint-Wandering Wind).
Tongfeng refers to wandering pain throughout all joints, or swelling at the painful sites, or fever, with inability to move hands and feet; this is called Lijie Feng (Joint-Wandering Wind). This occurs because Wind-Damp pathogenic factors are contracted and stagnate in the meridians, transforming into Heat internally, causing body fluids to condense into Phlegm. Treatment should distinguish between upper and lower locations and differentiate between Wind and Dampness, employing methods to resolve Phlegm and nourish Blood; once Phlegm is resolved, the disease will heal spontaneously.
Pulse of Wind-Heat type is floating and rapid; Pulse of Damp-Heat type is deep and rapid; Pulse of Damp-Phlegm type is deep and slippery; Pulse of Blood Deficiency type is soggy and weak.
One type caused by Wind requires modification of Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction).
One type caused by Dampness requires Danggui Niangtong Tang (Angelica Joint-Alleviating Decoction) or Cangzhu Fujian San (Atractylodes Double-Decoction Powder).
One type caused by Phlegm requires modification of Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction).
One type caused by Blood Deficiency requires modification of Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) or Danggui Huoxue Tang (Angelica Blood-Invigorating Decoction).
Medication varies according to the upper, middle, and lower parts of the body where pain occurs:
○ Upper part pain is mostly treated from the perspective of Wind, using Wind-dispersing herbs such as Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), and Weilingxian (Pedicularis Radix).
○ Middle part pain is often due to Blood Deficiency, requiring blood-nourishing and blood-invigorating herbs such as Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Ruxiang (Olibanum), and Honghua (Carthami Flos).
○ Lower part pain is mostly treated from the perspective of Dampness, using damp-resolving herbs such as Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), and Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix).
One type caused by Phlegm-Fluids requires phlegm-resolving and qi-smoothing herbs such as Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Nanxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen).
One type caused by Damp-Heat requires Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine) and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex).
One type caused by Damp-Cold requires Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
Shoulder and back pain with inability to look back indicates stagnation and non-circulation of Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian Qi; it should be dispersed with Wind-dispersing herbs, specifically using Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Universal Relief Powder).
Spinal pain, neck stiffness, sensation of waist breaking, and sensation of neck pulling require Qianghuo Shengshi Tang (Notopterygium Rain-Dispelling Decoction).
For any joint pain, Bo Gui (thin Cinnamon Twig/Cortex) must be used to guide the medication to the site of pain, or it must be stir-fried with wine to enter the meridians.
