Ye (Dysphagia/Choking sensation): Refers to difficulty in swallowing food, a sensation of obstruction preventing downward passage, or ingestion accompanied by pain. The pathology is located in the throat. Ge (Diaphragmatic obstruction): Refers to food entering the diaphragm but encountering reverse flow of Qi, fullness, oppression, dull pain, slight relief after belching, or comfort after vomiting. The pathology is located in the diaphragm. These two conditions often occur together; Ye invariably involves Ge, and Ge invariably involves Ye. They are precursors to Fanwei (Reverse Vomiting). This condition arises from accumulated depression and deep sorrow causing Qi stagnation that fails to disperse, eventually forming this disease over time. Zhang Jifeng's Fanglun states: "This disease is not external, nor internal; it does not belong to Cold, nor to Heat; it is neither Excess nor Deficiency." Therefore, medicinal treatment is difficult to achieve efficacy. It is mostly caused by worry, thought, anger, and resentment, which disturb Qi and damage the Spirit. When Qi accumulates internally, movement triggers various symptoms; when Qi is calm, the disease subsides. Palpation cannot locate the site of the disease, vision cannot discern the cause of facial color changes, and hearing cannot identify the source of abnormal sounds. Thus, acupuncture and herbal medicine fail to obtain results. This is a disease of the Shen (Spirit) and Yi (Intellect). What profound words these are. (It is advisable to select from formulas such as Shengjiang Banxia Tang, Xiangsha Kuanzhong Tang, Wuge Kuanzhong San, Gushen Jiahe San, Tongzhi Buzhi Yunpi Tang, and Daididang Wan.)
