(Treatment of Zang Malaria.)
Nux Moschata (Rou Dou Kou) and Cardamomi Fructus (Cao Dou Kou) (each two fruits. One is wrapped in dough with water and baked/roasted, the other is used raw); Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Hou Po) (two cun long, half is soaked in ginger juice and roasted, half is used raw); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Da Gan Cao) (two liang, half is roasted, half is used raw); Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang) (two pieces, size like a date, one is roasted wrapped in wet paper, one is used raw). Divide into two doses, decoct in water. Note: Medicines for treating malaria often combine cold and hot properties, and mix raw and cooked herbs, because the disease presents with both cold and heat symptoms. Thus, this method is used to harmonize Yin and Yang; this principle should be understood.
Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Ban Xia), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang), Crataegi Fructus (Shan Zha), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhi Shi), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Hou Po), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chen Pi), Tsaoko Fructus (Cao Guo), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cang Zhu), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Qing Pi), Persicae Semen (Tao Ren), Carthami Flos (Hong Hua), Hordeum Germinatum (Mai Ya), Massae Fermentatae Sojicae (Shen Qu) (each five qian); Sparganii Rhizoma (San Leng), Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma (Peng Zhu), Natrii Carbonas Depuratus (Hai Fen) (each seven qian); Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum (Bie Jia) (stir-fried with vinegar, one liang); Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiang Fu) (stir-fried with vinegar, eight qian). Make pills using Massae Fermentatae Sojicae paste, take with tonic medicine.
Poria (Bai Fu Ling), Amomi Fructus (Sha Ren), Coicis Semen (Yi Yi Ren) (stir-fried), Eriobotryae Folium (Pi Pa Ye) (remove hairs, stir-fried with ginger), Mori Cortex (Sang Bai Pi) (stir-fried), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chen Xiang) (grind into juice), Caryophylli Flos (Ding Xiang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), Schisandrae Fructus (Wu Wei Zi), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Bai Dou Kou), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) (roasted), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu) (each five fen); Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Qing Pi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chen Pi), Arecae Pericarpium (Da Fu Pi) (wash), Eucommiae Cortex (Du Zhong) (stir-fried with ginger juice), Oryzae Fructus Germinatus (Gu Ya), Agastachis Herba (Huo Xiang), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Ban Xia Qu) (stir-fried), Suifengzi, Dendrobii Caulis (Shi Hu) (stir-fried with wine), Massae Fermentatae Sojicae (Shen Qu) (stir-fried), Arecae Semen (Bing Lang), Aucklandiae Radix (Mu Xiang) (grind into juice, each three fen). Take three qian per dose, decoct with Ginger and Jujube, take well after meals. It treats spleen and stomach disharmony, chest and diaphragm stuffiness and oppression, rebellious qi generating phlegm, and loss of appetite. Li Daizhao said: In Lingnan, the terrain is low and the soil is thin. Thin soil allows Yang Qi to leak easily. People living there have loose interstices and sweat much, causing Qi to stagnate upward. Low terrain leads to excessive dampness. Morning and evening fog, heavy rains in spring and summer cause people to contract dampness, resulting in heavy limbs and fatigue. Illnesses mostly involve upper epigastric depression, empty irritability in the chest, pain in waist and knees, and cold/coldness in legs and feet. Generally, it is heat above and cold below. Each episode involves chills, fever, and profuse sweating; it is inappropriate to use diaphoresis again. Since the lower body is already cold, purgation is also inappropriate. For other cases, medicines that warm the middle, secure the lower, and ascend/descend the righteous Qi of Yin and Yang are used. Ten treatments yield ten cures. Alternatively, Sheng Jiang Fu Zi Tang can be taken cold or warm, suddenly cooling the stuffiness and irritability in the chest and diaphragm. This is because Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fu Zi) combined with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang) can both disperse pathogens and guide deficient heat into the Lower Jiao. Some who used Zhu Fu Tang found their condition worsened, because Fu Zi combined with Atractylodis Rhizoma (Zhu/Bai Zhu) can imprison heat, preventing Qi from dispersing. If pulse and signs indicate excess syndrome, with yellow-red face, Fu Zi must not be used. If the syndrome is doubtful, Jia He San is suitable; it regulates Middle Qi and ascends/descends Yin and Yang. Even for Yang syndromes with more heat, taking it brings relief. After two or three days of intake, the chills and fever syndromes will naturally distinguish themselves.
