The Southern Tang Chancellor Feng Yanji suffered from severe brain pain for several days without relief. The Director of the Imperial Medical Bureau, Wu Tingshao, secretly asked the cooks: "What food does the Chancellor usually favor?" The cook replied: "He often eats mountain pheasants and partridges." Wu Tingshao said: "I have found the cause." He administered Gantou Decoction (Sweet Bean Decoction), and he recovered. This is because mountain pheasants and partridges consume Aconitum carmichaelii (Wutou) and Pinellia ternata (Banxia); thus, this method was used to detoxify them. (From *History of Southern Tang*)
For those who accidentally eat grouper roe and suffer from incessant vomiting, take Fish Tail Grass (Yuwicaoh), grind it to extract juice, and ingest a small amount; the vomiting will stop immediately. (Fish Tail Grass, also known as HT wood root, resembles Vitex negundo (Huangjing). It blooms purple flowers in spikes in August, has leaves resembling Salix (willow), grows no taller than large trees, remains evergreen in winter, and fishermen use it to poison fish.)
In the valleys between Siming, Wenzhou, and Taizhou, many mushrooms grow, but they vary in species. Accidental ingestion during meals often leads to poisoning, sometimes fatal, likely due to the fumes of snake venom. A monk taught people to dig up soil, stir it with cold water until turbid, let it settle for a moment, and then drink the supernatant liquid; all who did so survived. This prescription appears in Tao Hongjing's commentary on the *Bencao Jing Ji Zhu*, called Earth Slurry (Dijiang), which also treats maple tree mushrooms that cause uncontrollable laughter. Those who say "eating laughing mushrooms" must know this method if living in mountainous areas.
Recently, a court official and a high monk traveled westward via Guixia. The journey was desolate and remote. By noon each day, they were extremely hungry. Arriving at a small village, they heard the household kept gu (poisonous insects/witchcraft) and would inevitably offer them food. They hesitated whether to stay or leave. The monk said: "I have a divine spell; do not worry." When the food arrived, the monk closed his eyes and recited the spell. Soon, a small spider crawled along the rim of the bowl. The monk said: "Kill it quickly!" Thus, they ate the meal without any adverse effects. The spell was: "Gusu Zhuo Moye Zhuo, I know the gu poison grows four corners. Father is Qionglongqiong, Mother is Sheye Nu. Myriad thousands of relatives, I now know you all. Mahasama Mahas." At that time, companions eagerly copied the spell, remaining safe wherever they went. Another detoxification formula was also transmitted: Seven grains of Fermented Soybean (Douchi), two seeds of Croton tiglium (Badou, peeled), and one part of All-Grass Frost (Baicaoshuang) are ground together into fine powder, mixed with water to form pills the size of mung beans, and swallowed with seven pills using Mugwort Fragrant Tea (Maoxiang Tang). Additionally, a monk from Quanzhou treated Jincan (Golden Silkworm) toxicity, stating that upon feeling poisoned, one should first suck on Alum (Baifan); if it tastes sweet and not astringent, and chewing raw beans feels non-fishy, the diagnosis is correct. Simply decocting the bark of Pomegranate Root (Shiliu Genpi) and drinking it causes the live worms to be vomited out, resulting in immediate recovery. Li Huizhi stated that grinding Alum (Baifan) and tea stains into powder and taking it with cold water can treat all kinds of toxins. These are recorded here to benefit future generations.
