The pulse manifests as "Yong Nu" (courageous anger), with a green complexion; the bones manifest as "Yong Nu", with a white complexion; the vessels manifest as "Yong Nu", with a red complexion. (From *Youyang Zazu*)
When a person is usually free from painful diseases, yet suddenly appears like a corpse—motionless, silent, unconscious, eyes closed, unable to open the mouth or speak due to locked jaws—or perhaps slightly aware but aversive to sound, experiencing only dizziness and vertigo before regaining consciousness after a while. This is caused by excessive sweating leading to blood deficiency, where Qi merges into the blood, Yang floats upward alone without descending, causing Qi stagnation and obstruction, thus making the body appear lifeless. When the excess Qi subsides and blood returns, Yin and Yang reconnect, hence consciousness returns after a while. This condition is named "Yu Mao" (Depression and Vertigo) or also "Xue Jue" (Blood Syncope). It is common in women and should be treated with Baiwei Tang (White Peony Root Decoction) or Cangong San (Master Cang's Powder). (From *Ben Shi Fang*)
What is called "Shi Jue" (Corpse-like Coma) is due to the reversal of Yin and Yang Qi. Here, Yang pulses suddenly sink downward, and Yin pulses suddenly rise upward. Yin and Yang separate from their proper positions, Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi fail to circulate, True Qi becomes chaotic, and pathogenic factors take advantage. The presentation resembles death, with faint and irregular respiration, yet the pulse still beats while the form lacks awareness. If one hears a whistling sound in the ears and warmth between the thighs, this confirms the diagnosis. Even without the whistling sound, if the pulse beats, it should be treated as Shi Jue. If the Cun Kou (Radial Artery at the wrist) pulse is deep, large, and slippery: deep indicates Excess, slippery indicates Qi; when Excess and Qi contend, the body is warm and sweaty, indicating the pathogen has entered the Fu organs. Although sudden syncope occurs with loss of consciousness, recovery of Zheng Qi leads to spontaneous healing. If the lips, face, and body are cyanotic and cold, the pathogen has entered the Zang organs; this is also sudden syncope with loss of consciousness, representing a fatal prognosis. If the pulse at the Guan position on the left hand shows both Yin and Yang aspects as deficient, indicating deficiency in the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian, the patient may exhibit mental confusion, symptoms resembling Shi Jue with loss of consciousness, and visual hallucinations.
Diseases in humans arise essentially from Deficiency, Excess, Cold, and Heat, each having specific manifestations that can be treated accordingly; medication involves merely tonifying, purging, cooling, or warming. However, there are conditions not caused by Deficiency, Excess, Cold, or Heat, as mentioned previously. These include insects entering the ears or throat, fishbones or other obstructions stuck in the throat, sores caused by earwig urine, sores generated by human shadows, and foreign bodies like dust in the eyes. Such conditions are not of the nature of Deficiency, Excess, Cold, or Heat, and their treatment should rely on Yi Zhi (Mind/Intent Therapy). For example: administering cow's milk or applying roasted pork over the ears to treat insects in the ears; silently reciting the name of an cormorant or wearing a fishnet to treat fishbone obstruction; using ivory powder and fox bone to treat bone obstruction; collecting soil from the ground where an earwig has crawled to treat sores from earwig urine; applying bile, chicken liver blood, or gazing at beans in water to treat foreign bodies in the eyes; using bamboo sap teeth to treat bamboo splinters. These are all methods of Yi Zhi (Mind/Intent Therapy).
