A person in Qizhou suffered from mania, often singing: "Wuling Huagai is exquisite at dawn, Tianfu has always been within your mansion. This sorrowful feeling cannot be fully expressed with words; a single radish burns my palace." He also sang: "Treading on Spring Sunshine, rain and dust fill the human world in February. When treading on Spring Sunshine ends, autumn winds rise, breaking the hearts of white-haired people in the human world." Later, a Daoist priest treated him with medicine and methods. The priest said, "In a dream, I saw a young girl in red skirts leading me into a palace decorated entirely in red and purple. A younger sister figure made me sing." The priest said, "This is exactly 'Heavenly Wheat Poison' (poisoning from eating large amounts of wheat). The girl corresponds to the Heart Spirit, and the younger sister figure corresponds to the Spleen Spirit." According to medical classics, radishes can treat facial toxins, hence the phrase "burn my palace" (referring to burning the abdomen/uterus). He was then given medicine along with radishes, and he recovered. (From *Dongwei Zhi*)
A patient experienced nocturnal emissions. Initially, there were visual dreams, but later, even in dreams, nothing was seen. Day and night, without control, frequent seminal leakage occurred. It was treated as a heart disease due to deficiency of Heart Qi, but taking medicines to tonify Heart Qi had no effect. It was also treated as Kidney Qi deficiency, but taking medicines to tonify the Kidney had no effect. The physician asked the patient if he felt cold in the head. The patient replied, "It is precisely because of the coldness in the head that I took Cold-Expelling Powder, and subsequently found relief." Indeed, the head is the convergence of all Yang meridians and the Sea of Marrow. Coldness in the head leads to insecurity of the Marrow, thereby causing seminal leakage. For those suffering from this condition, one must first expel wind-cold from the head, harmonize the Qi of the head, and concurrently take medicines to benefit the Heart and Kidneys. There would be no case that did not recover. (From the same source)
Wang Shuhe discussed in *Mai Jue* (Pulse Classic): "Overflowing past Guan, bone pain, vexation, and irritability." Tongzhenzi explained: "When the Heart pulse is excessive and overflows past the Guan position, tendons become tight and bones are bound, thus causing bone pain." The Master said: "Tight tendons result in tendon spasms; how can this cause bone pain? The reason why an excessive Heart pulse causes bone pain is that the Heart belongs to Fire, and bones belong to Kidney Water. When the Heart pulse overflows past Guan, Water fails to overcome Fire, scorching the bones and causing pain, rather than being caused by tight tendons." (From *Yi Yu*, same source)
The Yellow Emperor asked: "Some people who are heavily pregnant reach the ninth month and lose their voice. Why is this?" Qibo answered: "This is because the collateral vessels of the uterus are obstructed." The Emperor asked: "Why do you say so?" Qibo said: "The collateral vessels of the uterus are connected to the Kidney. The Shaoyin Kidney meridian passes through the Kidney and connects to the root of the tongue, therefore speech is impaired." The Emperor asked: "How should it be treated?" Qibo said: "No treatment is needed; it will recover naturally in the tenth month." (From *Zhi Mi Fang*)
When a person lies down, blood returns to the Liver. The Liver receives blood and enables vision; the feet receive blood and enable walking; the palms receive blood and enable grasping; the fingers receive blood and enabling holding/picking up.
Vessels are the residence of blood. If the vessel pulse is excess, blood is excess; if the vessel pulse is deficient, blood is deficient.
During the Kaiyuan era, there was a famous physician named Ji Peng. By observing people's complexions and listening to their conversation, he could know the depth of their illness without needing to palpate the pulse. The Emperor heard of this and summoned him to the Ye Ting Palace to examine a palace maid. Every morning, the maid laughed, sang, cried, and shouted as if suffering from mania, and her feet could not touch the ground for walking. Ji Peng observed and said, "This must be caused by falling heavily after eating a full meal and exerting great strength." He then administered Yunmu Tang (Cloud Mother Decoction), allowing her to fall into a deep sleep. Upon waking, her suffering disappeared. Upon inquiry, she said that because Princess Dahua gave birth, grand songs and music were held in the palace. She was the princess's singer, worried that her voice might not be clear enough and prolonged, so she ate hoof soup until full before the song banquet. After the songs finished, she felt intense heat in her chest. While playing on the tiled terrace, she fell from a height and lay unconscious for a long time before regaining consciousness. She subsequently developed mania and inability to walk. (From *Minghuang Zalü*)
