Cui Yaofeng, the Defense Commissioner of Jinzhou, had a nephew named Li Yanji. Suddenly, his left upper eyelid itched and developed a small sore, which gradually enlarged to the size of a duck egg. The base was taut like a string, and pressure prevented him from opening his eye. Cui Yaofeng was worried about this. One day, he made his nephew drink heavily until he was drunk, then incised and removed the growth. Li Yanji felt no pain. Upon rupture, a small yellow sparrow was found inside, chirping and flying away (from *Wenqi Lu*).
*Huatuo Biezhuan* records: In Langya, there was a woman with a sore on her right thigh that itched but did not hurt; it healed only to recur. Huatuo said, "You must obtain a dog the color of rice bran, tie it to a horse, and run for fifty li. Then cut off its head and place it facing the itch." They followed this instruction. Soon, a snake moved within the skin. It was extracted using an iron rod pierced through it, measuring about three chi in length. He recovered in seven days (similar accounts are found in *Hou Hanshu* and *Duyi Zhi*).
To the southwest of the State of Rinnan, there is a stone mirror spanning hundreds of li, bright and transparent enough to reflect the five zang organs and six fu organs. It is also called the "Immortal Mirror." If the locals fell ill, they would look into it to see their form, thereby identifying which organ was diseased. They would then collect herbs and take them, resulting in recovery without exception.
Fang Boyu, General of Zhige, suffered from a cold disease, often wearing thick clothes even in summer. Zhang Sibo examined him and said, "Your condition is heat; it must be treated by inducing sweating with cold water, but this can only be done in winter." In November, two men held Fang Boyu while he lay naked on a stone slab. Cold water was poured over his head from top to bottom, using twenty hu in total. Fang Boyu's jaw clenched, and his family cried out, begging to stop, but the doctor refused. After pouring another hundred hu of water, Fang Boyu could move again. He saw steam rising vigorously from his back and stood up, saying, "The heat is unbearable; I beg for frozen drinks." Zhang Sibo gave him water, which he drank in one gulp of one dou, and the disease was cured (attributed to *Shiji* in the source text).
There are strange diseases in the world. Lü Jinsu, serving as a Zhipiao and Administrator of Yingzhou, suddenly fell ill and his body shrank progressively. At the time of death, he was only the size of a child. This disease had never been recorded in ancient times, and no one could identify it.
In one household, relatives perceived straight objects, such as bowstrings or rulers, as curved hooks. Everything appeared hooked. The medical monk Feng Zhen witnessed this personally (two accounts from *Bitan*).
Another woman suffered from a chronic illness lasting years, known in the world as "Cold-Heat Zhu Disease" (a lingering infectious disease alternating between chills and fever). In winter, Huatuo had her sit in a stone trough. At dawn, he used cold water to pour over her, stating that it must be completed one hundred times. By the seventieth pouring, she was shivering violently, near death. Huatuo ordered the count to continue. At the eightieth pouring, heat began to vaporize, making a roaring sound and rising two or three chi high. After completing one hundred pourings, Huatuo ordered fires to be lit to warm the bed, covered her with thick clothing, and after a long time, profuse sweating occurred. Powder was applied to dry the sweat, and she recovered.
