Ying (Nutritive) level deficiency fails to nourish the sinews, leading to tendon tension and pain; or due to loose exterior defense allowing external Wind to invade internally, where it stagnates for a long time and transforms into Heat, consuming Ying blood and drying the collaterals. This causes the sinews and vessels to become withered and astringent, resulting in whole-body weakness and continuous, wandering pain without cessation. The pulse is rapid and wiry. Administer Yangyin Rundao Tang (Nourishing Yin and Moistening Dryness Decoction) (see formula later). Slow treatment will naturally yield results.
Internal latent Yin-Cold forces floating Fire to scatter outward. Symptoms include a moist tongue, a deep, slow, and deficient pulse, and macules resembling mosquito bites on the skin. One should administer Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) (see formula later). If the eruption is caused by seasonal pathogens manifesting as Yang syndrome, initially there may be alternating chills and fever, or a calm pulse with cool body temperature, or additionally vomiting, nausea, restlessness, thirst without desire to drink, headache with sweating. This indicates pathogenic factors sinking into the Stomach Fu organ, forcing Heat to steam within the Ying level and consume fluids (see therapeutic methods earlier). If bitter-cold medicines are mistakenly administered early, causing Ying Qi to congeal like ice, the macules will remain hidden, accompanied by coma and delirious speech, which may be incurable.
After running or when feet are hot, suddenly immersing them in cold water for washing, or working in water. When people move, their pores open, allowing Cold-Dampness to invade internally. This obstructs the meridians and collaterals, hindering the movement of Qi mechanism, making steaming and transformation difficult. Yin fluids aggregate with Blood. The "tunnels" (referring to meridians and vessels), composed largely of fluid, result in muscles becoming stiff, board-like, swollen, and shiny, enlarging daily without sweat excretion. Initially, moxibustion and acupuncture with mugwort can be used, assisted by medicinal wine, which might reduce minor symptoms. If prolonged, it becomes a chronic affliction of the foot.
Infants with congenital insufficiency, if sucking breast milk fails to transform into muscle and flesh, then Essence and Qi cannot ascend to fill the Marrow Sea (brain). This leads to emaciation of the limbs, while the head becomes increasingly large, bright, and white, which is alarming. Some die shortly after onset, while others survive for years; treatment is often futile. I once saw the son of a salt merchant who ground real Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) into powder, made cotton caps, and wore them for long periods in winter and summer, growing up healthy. This merely broadens one's horizons; how many extremely wealthy individuals in the world have the resources to purchase Ginseng? Moreover, where can genuine Ginseng be found? Would other children benefit from this method?
Small neck masses are called Lueli (Scrofula), while larger ones are called Madao (Horseshoe abscess). The etiology and treatment methods were discussed in great detail by former sages, yet they are difficult to apply universally. Most cases arise from Liver Meridian anger and depression, Phlegm and Blood stasis in the Stomach Fu, and unsmooth meridians, causing Phlegm to rise with Qi to the neck. Both Qi and Phlegm can accumulate and transform into Heat. Qi coagulates upon encountering Phlegm; Phlegm swells upon encountering Heat. Long-standing accumulation forms the lesion. For movable masses, treat with fire needle cauterization. For ulcerated lesions, regularly apply Wuta Toucao Gao (Five-Point Head Grass Plaster) (see *Qingnang Ji*, one plaster lasts ten days). Internally administer Qinggan Huatan Wan (Clear Liver and Resolve Phlegm Pill) (see formula later); recovery requires several months. Masses that are immobile and spread to the chest and hypochondrium are difficult to treat. There are also cases arising from eating food remnants left by rats, or from constitutional deficiency and overwork injury.
