Commentary states: When the clear and turbid energies had not yet differentiated, there was no distinction between day and night; only when Xuanhuang (Heaven and Earth) began to separate did warmth and coolness appear. The four seasons were thus divided, giving rise to cold and heat, while the three lights (Sun, Moon, and Stars) shone brilliantly, with the sun's image waxing and waning. Humans are endowed with the Five Constants, and their Couli (skin texture and pores) may be open or closed. Therefore, Laozi said: "The reason I have great afflictions is that I have a body; if I did not have a body, what affliction would I have?" From this perspective, once the physical form is established, illness inevitably arises. Reflecting quietly on this matter, only that which is formless can remain far from worries and dangers. Even Heaven, Earth, and Sages cannot escape afflictions, let alone humans who are as fragile as a candle flame in the wind. In ancient times, there were rulers skilled in regulating acupuncture needles and taking pulses, emperors who tasted herbs and refined stones to mend the sky, and countless others who labored anxiously for all living beings without rest. Since then, scholars who exhausted divine wisdom and sages who poured out their hearts and thoughts, assisting together in this endeavor, are too numerous to record. Thus, although medical formulas number in the thousands, they do not fully exhaust the nature of medicine. Hence, there are decoction therapies, acupuncture and moxibustion therapies, incantation therapies, talisman seal therapies, and Dao Yin (guiding and pulling) therapies. These five methods are all emergency rescue techniques. Why? Because diseases arise without clear origin, and despite the myriad medical treatments, there is still sorrow over mistakes within the common people; among the court and society, incurable diseases persist, which is truly lamentable. Current physicians, failing to study antiquity and lacking deep insight, rely solely on family traditions, claiming mastery, boasting of their strengths, and disparaging others' weaknesses. Due to such stubbornness, they ultimately fail to grasp the source and flow of medical knowledge. I admired technical arts in my youth and revered the medical way in my maturity. Upon encountering a certain method, how could I hesitate to share it for a thousand gold pieces? Thus, famous formulas and unique techniques are no longer kept secret. Moreover, this book exists in various forms throughout the world, but its text is fragmented and disordered, lacking a scroll format. Even existing copies contain merely two or three chapters, lacking specialization and depth, making them incomplete in exploring the highest efficacy. This particular method possesses a mysterious nature; its language is unconventional and does not conform to ordinary reasoning, so it cannot be understood through deduction alone. However, by following the prescribed methods, the therapeutic effects exceed expectations. If not compiled and preserved, it risks being lost. It is now edited into two volumes, comprising twenty-two chapters, titled *Jin Jing* (Scripture of Incantations). The detailed regulations are provided in subsequent sections. Learned gentlemen, please do not conceal this knowledge.
