One Treatise, Eight Formulas
Treatise: Once a patient's condition has become established, one must diligently administer medicinal remedies. Therefore, formulas for nourishment and tonification are formulated. These formulas consist of drugs such as the Five-Stone and Three-Stone cold food pills and powders. They should only be used if the patient suffers from consumptive disease (Xu Lao) that is fully developed, hemiplegia confined to bed, is near death, and has no other recourse. Indeed, these can revive the seemingly dead. Ordinary people without illness should not use them.
Zhang Zhongjing's Purple Stone Cold Food Powder for treating relapse after recovery from Taiyang Disease (Cold Damage):
Zi Shi Ying (Purple Fluorite), Bai Shi Ying (White Fluorite), Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite), Zhong Ru (Stalactite, refined), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Wen Ge (Clam Shell), Gui Jiu (Podophyllum Rhizome), Tai Yi Yu Liang (Kaolin, each 2.5 liang); Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed and peeled), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, each 1 liang).
The above fourteen ingredients are crushed, sifted into a powder, and administered with wine, two square-cun bi (a measuring spoon) per dose.
This formula is commonly used with excellent results. It primarily treats deficiency and damage in men and women of all ages, as well as cold-dampness toxicity, dysentery with phlegm-fluid retention, cough, and excessive hunger. It assists the stomach qi of the elderly and can prolong life. It also treats cholera-like syndrome (Huo Luan). Administered with wine, two square-cun bi, it leads to recovery. It also treats various post-illness chronic dysentery (Xiu Xi Xia Li) where life is critical; administration brings improvement. This is a most miraculous formula for treating humans:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed and peeled, each 3 fen), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, each 5 fen), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, 1.5 liang), Mu Li (Oyster Shell, roasted), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix).
The above thirteen ingredients are individually crushed, sifted, weighed according to their proportions, mixed, and ground for a thousand strokes. In the morning, take one square-cun bi with warm wine. For the elderly, frequent administration of three doses yields good results. It also treats consumptive disease (Xu Lao).
It treats fullness and distension in the heart, abdomen, and hypochondrium, with pathogenic qi rushing upward. It also treats panting, palpitations, and inability to breathe from the chest and heart; gurgling sounds in the abdomen like thunder; acid regurgitation and belching; foul odor from raw food; indigestion; alternating diarrhea and constipation; mental restlessness and abdominal discomfort; aversion to human voices; preference for lying alone; constant desire for warmth; confusion and forgetfulness; palpitations and fear as if threatened; shortness of breath and vomiting/reversal; and defensive ringing in the abdomen. The five zang organs are disordered. Such pathogenic factors residing internally cause various diseases, all originating from overwork and hardship. If one indulges excessively in pleasure, leading to contraction of wind-cold, the treatment is the same. Take this medicine before breakfast in the morning, administering two square-cun bi with pure fine wine; reduce the dose if intolerance occurs.
Formula for Removing Headgear and Thin Clothes to Promote Movement:
Zhong Ru (Stalactite, refined), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed and peeled), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Mu Li (Oyster Shell, roasted, each 1 fen); Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, each 1 liang); Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, each 5 fen); Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3.5 liang).
The above twelve ingredients are individually crushed, sifted, and ground for a thousand strokes. Take two bi with wine. Administer on Jian days until Po days, then repeat the cycle.
Another Formula: The described symptoms and indications are the same as above.
Zhong Ru (Stalactite, refined powder), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, each 3 fen), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root), Mu Li (Oyster Shell, roasted), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, each 0.5 liang); Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, each 5 fen); Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root, each 1 liang).
The above twelve ingredients are crushed, sifted into a powder. Administration is identical to the previous formula. Add Hua Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) for cold conditions, or add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) for heat conditions, each 3 fen.
